The very close by Siuslaw River rises in the mountains of southwestern Lane County, about 10 miles west of Cottage Grove. It flows generally west-northwest through the mountains, past Swisshome, entering the Pacific at Florence. The head of tide is 26 miles upstream. It is part of the homeland of the Siuslaw people, after whom it is named. The valley of the river has been one of the productive timber regions in Oregon. The lower course of the river passes through Siuslaw National Forest. The Coos Bay branch of the Coos Bay Rail Link crosses many bridges as it follows the narrow, winding valley of the Siuslaw River to the swing bridge at Cushman. The river has historically been a spawning ground for Chinook and coho salmon. Although the Chinook population is substantial, coho numbers have declined from an annual average of 209,000 fish between 1889 and 1896 to just over 3,000 fish between 1990 and 1995\. The estuary of the river is surrounded by extensive wetlands that are a significant habitat for migratory birds along the coast. It is one of the very few Western Oregon rivers where all major forks are undammed. Paddle the slow moving 3 mile designated canoe trail between Siltcoos Lake and the Pacific Ocean.Take a scenic drive up Hwy 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse where free tours are offered daily. Get your adrenalin flowing on a nearby dune buggy tour or with an ATV rental, or go crabbing from the Siuslaw Bay public fishing pier at the end of South Jetty road where crabbing is excellent from late spring until the fresh water from winter rains force the crabs out to the ocean. \-This is a NON Smoking Home- Parking: Parking for one car in the carport under the condo. It was spotlessly clean, beautifully maintained. We really liked being right in the heart of Florence, and yet it was so, so quiet. The kitchen is well-appointed and uncluttered. Our only complaint is the living room furniture. We were unable to sit there because the couch and chair are so old and worn out they hurt our backs. The living room is so light and airy, so attractive, it was a shame not to be able to use it. Highly recommend that management update that furniture. Beyond that, it was great. The house feels bigger than it looks in the photos. The beds were comfortable and it was very clean. The laundry on the top floor between the bedrooms was nice to have. My wife has chemical sensitivities and so is always nervous about perfume and Febreze smells but she did not have any trouble here. The sheets and towels had been laundered with something scented but it wasn't strong. An improvement could be to use unscented products. But it was fine. We appreciated having new (wrapped) soaps in both bathrooms and also a new sponge for dishes in the kitchen with a small bottle of dish soap. The location was great. We walked down to the coffee shop every morning and to the fantastic bakery across the street. Highly recommend for people who can handle stairs. We will stay here again. ##### Russell R. It had everything we needed pots pans dish soap shampoo. The car port was pretty small to get in and out of i have a ford escape. The only thing i didnt like was the shower head its old and out dated need to put in one that you has a hose so you have water pressure. The entry lock box was hard to work. We never did find the trash containers, even after asking other tenants and painters. The tv didn’t work the wires were hanging all over. The bbq didn’t work and if it would have there was no way to light it. Nothing was fixed during our stay and no compensation was offer. I am disabled and it was really difficult. Cant stay here in the future.
