Pocket Guide: Field

The tiny village of Field, in British Columbia, is the ideal base for your outdoor adventures in the Canadian Rockies. Field is in the Yoho National Park, which borders Banff National Park. Yoho means awe and wonder in Cree (the language of some of Canada’s indigenous people) and when you see the views from here, you’ll understand why the name was chosen. Field is just 17 miles west of Lake Louise and 51 miles from Banff along the beautiful Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1).

Where to Stay near Field, BC

Stay in a cosy lodge just outside of Field to explore the mountains of the Yoho National Park or find a place to stay alongside Kicking Horse river in the centre of town. For more choice of hotels, resorts and hostels, cross over into the Banff National Park to Lake Louise, which is surrounded by mountains and has a ski resort nearby. Field’s tiny community town is perfectly situated to get out and about in the great outdoors to do some wildlife spotting wildlife. You’ll often see brown bear and elk wandering the streets of Field.

The town, like so many places near the Banff National Park, started out as a work camp for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1883 it was known as Third Siding until someone named it after potential investor Cyrus West Field. He didn’t end up investing, but the name stuck. And investment came in the form of the area’s first luxury hotel – Mount Stephen House – and the tourists started arriving. The hotel is no longer there, but there are plenty of other places to stay in and near to Field.

A Close-Knit Artisan Community

Field itself only has around 200 residents, but they are a close-knit, artisan community. There are good shopping opportunities in the village, which even has its own pottery studio. Snow gear can be bought or rented in the town, as can gear for summer activities, and there are souvenir and grocery shops as well.

Choose a hotel in the village of Field for a unique Banff National Park mountain adventure holiday.
