Pocket Guide: Keighley East Riddlesden Hall Hotels

The industrial heritage of West Yorkshire is well known. During the Industrial Revolution this region was a centre of the burgeoning textile manufacturing industry, and the canals, mills and factories which can still be seen across the county are a valuable and protected legacy of those days. Fortunes were made by enterprising industrialists, and many of the great civic buildings in cities like Halifax, Leeds and Bradford were built by such men. When you come here and stay at a West Yorkshire hotel or guesthouse, of which there are many across the region, you can also visit some fine stately homes, many of which, like East Riddlesden Hall, were the homes of local prosperous merchants of that period.

Keighley Hotels for East Riddlesden Hall

East Riddlesden Hall was built as a clothier's mansion in 1640. It's a fine example of a 17th-century house, close to Keighley, and distinguished by its battlements and large rose window. Inside, visitors can view much old oak furniture, oil paintings and suits of armour, and in the grounds there's an original and very fine example of a medieval tithe barn. The Hall was built by James Murgatroyd, who was obviously doing well out of his clothiers business and had dreams of aggrandisement far above his traditional station. But these were times of great change in English society. Like Walter Scott's later Gothic folly at Abbotsford, the public can now enjoy the fruits of a hard-working and successful man's private vision of the baronial manor house. It has everything you need for an enjoyable day out from your hotel in Keighley, or elsewhere in West Yorkshire.

A Day at East Riddlesden Hall with West Yorkshire Hotels

The gardens that surround East Riddlesden Hall are a particular delight, formally laid out and with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the sun. There are play areas for smaller kids, and a Riverside Walk has recently been opened, allowing visitors to comfortably stroll along the pleasant banks of the River Aire. Visit East Riddlesden Hall from your West Yorkshire hotel for the day and you'll have plenty to keep you happily occupied.
