Known as the ‘Nature Island of the Caribbean’, Dominica is famous for its lush vegetation, volcanic landscapes and incredible wildlife. There’s a wide ranging national park system which keeps much of the island looking pristine and a handful of stunning and accessible beaches. Explore the island and discover volcanic craters filled with water, mountainous terrain and characterful towns. Book a Dominica hotel; one of the most unique and exciting Caribbean islands, and in a part of the world that is this special, that’s really saying something.
Roseau - The island’s capital and main town, this is the place to book a hotel for typical cuisine and the island’s best shops. And the views of the mountains on one side and Caribbean Sea on the other are pretty spectacular.
French Quarter - The most picturesque part of the capital, the streets here are lined with beautiful and colourful buildings, many of which have balconies looking out into the street. Stay in a grand old hotel in the French Quarter.
Scott’s Head - A picturesque village in the southwest corner of the island, it sits right next to a curving bay which is an actually the rim of a volcanic crater. It’s a great place for scuba diving.
Calibishie - Another beautiful village that is located on a rugged coastline complete with crashing surf. The landscape just inland is also stunning, with waterfalls and rainforest.
With a comprehensive national park system on the island, you can explore preserved areas like the Northern and Central forest as well as the spectacular Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Walk through rainforest canopy spotting exotic birds and other wildlife or head to small fishing villages along the rugged coastline. Climb up to Boiling Lake, the world’s second largest thermally active lake. Check out Champagne, a naturally bubbling snorkelling spot or visit the villages of the stunningly beautiful central region, including Belles and Penrice. You can also pay a visit to the Jaco Steps, the former home of a colony of escaped slaves.
There are some incredible snorkelling and diving opportunities in Dominica, at Champagne and Scott’s Head in particular. You can also explore the island’s interior on a freshwater canoeing or kayaking expedition. Take a boat out whale or dolphin watching or meet the gentle giants - three turtle species that come here to breed. Hike or bike some of the island’s trails reaching waterfalls like Middleham and Trafalgar or soar through the forest canopy on a zip line. There are plenty of activity options across the island, and if all that has got your muscles aching, why not treat yourself to a day in a soothing hot springs like Screw’s Spa?
