Pocket Guide: Deal

The area around Deal is one of the most scenic and dramatic stretches of the amazing Kent coastline. It's a region packed with natural and cultural interest, and makes the perfect destination if you're looking for something to do for the day from your hotel, B&B or guesthouse in this part of the lovely Kent countryside. Great lumps of outrageously attractive clear chalk form the natural coastal backdrop, famous the world over, and there are numerous chic places to eat close by, along with historic pubs and top-end restaurants.

Explore Deal and the Chalk Cliffs

Stay at a hotel or B&B in the Deal area to be within easy striking distance of the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. These spectacular perpendicular walls of creamy, crumbly chalk look like nougat and you just want to eat them when you see them from a distance for the first time! They stretch for over 20 miles and have some of the most exciting cliff-top walking routes of any coastline in the UK. If you take a high-speed RIB or a ferry to nearby Dover you can see them in all their glory and appreciate why they hold such a special place in the nation's heart.

Be Close to Attractions in Deal

Deal's high street is an award-winning thoroughfare steeped in history and lined with independent shops as well as old smugglers' dens. The seafront is extremely photogenic and you can enjoy a café latte whilst enjoying the sight of traditional boats bobbing in the harbour area. There are buzzing pubs and cafés eateries all along the seafront, and nearby historic attractions include Deal Castle and Walmer Castle, which was the Duke of Wellington's command post for the area. An original pair of his famous boots is on display there. When you visit Deal, have easy access to all these attractions from your base at one of the local hotels such as the Royal Hotel or the wonderfully-named Blazing Donkey. You'll receive a warm welcome, and if you have kids in your party you can take them along to nearby Tides Leisure Centre.
