Ramsgate, in common with many of the other coastal towns and villages of this part of Kent, is packed with maritime heritage It has a traditional seaside atmosphere but also an air of refinement and elegance which puts one in mind of Jane Austen novels. This is probably because of the stately Georgian façades of many of its fine buildings, and the elegant Regency squares.
But don't be fooled into thinking this gentile town is stuck in a time warp! Ramsgate is also a thoroughly modern town full of excellent shopping opportunities on its high street and all the modern conveniences. Stay at one of Ramsgate's local hotels or guesthouses such as Albion House or Comfort Inn Ramsgate and you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore the town and its eventful and charming history.
Ramsgate is famous for its delightful waterside café culture as well as for its fascinating maritime heritage. It has an award-winning sandy beach in addition to a swish modern marina, so whether you're coming with the kids or on your own you'll have plenty to keep you occupied here. The famous architect Augustus Pugin used to live here at The Grange, a Gothic hideaway, and you can see the Pugins' family vault at nearby St Augustine's Church. The Ramsgate Tunnels, used extensively during World War II, are also a fascinating slice of local history and you can take a guided tour of them. Many visitors hop on a scenic boat trip from Ramsgate's unique Royal Harbour.
Ramsgate makes a great destination from a hotel, guesthouse or B&B in the area, as the whole region is full of interest. After enjoying refreshments on the Ramsgate waterfront, try spending a pleasant afternoon exploring some of the surrounding villages and towns. For a proper excursion, you can get in to Central London in just over an hour, but there's plenty to do in the immediate area too. Hiking and cycling along the local Viking Coastal Trail is always popular with all ages, and you can hire a bike either at Minnis Bay or in Margate itself. Take a picnic and enjoy the sights!
