Tallahassee is the capital of the US state of Florida, a centre for trade and agriculture with a young student community, including Florida State University. Its parks and gardens are well-known, and its subtropical climate makes it ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife conservation.
Florida offers a large number of attractions further away, all of which you can explore with a Tallahassee car hire.
How to get to and around Tallahassee?
Flights arrive at Tallahassee Regional Airport seven miles (under 20 minutes) from the city centre. Start by learning the region’s history at the Knott House Museum, affiliated to the Museum of Florida History. It was the Union Army’s headquarters during the Civil War, and where the Emancipation Proclamation was read in 1865. Inside the restored old Capitol building, another fascinating political history museum to visit is the Florida Historic Capitol Museum.
The Tallahassee Automobile and Collectibles Museum, eight miles northeast, will delight antique car enthusiasts. It displays 130 historical cars and a myriad of collectibles, such as the 1911 Ford Model T Torpedo Runabout, Abraham Lincoln’s hearse and The Penguin’s Duck Vehicle from the movie ‘Batman Returns’.
Six miles southwest (a 15-minute drive), by Lake Bradford, the Tallahassee Museum is a natural history museum with a twist, featuring nature trails, historic buildings, Floridian flora and fauna, combined with outdoor adventure activities, such as a zipline course. At the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park (a 20-minute drive), have picnics by the lake, walk or cycle among azaleas and camellias in the park’s ornamental garden. Park activities include swimming, canoeing and kayaking. Half an hour south of Tallahassee, the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge has been a protected habitat for migratory birds since 1931. Spanning 68,000 acres across Florida’s Gulf coast, it is home to 300 species of birds, many endangered, and a huge variety of animals, amphibians and reptiles.

Tips and tricks for driving in the US
American cars usually have automatic transmission. Drive on the right side. An international driving permit is not compulsory but recommended. Carry it at all times along with ID (passport) and proof of insurance.
Speed limits vary from state to state; in general stick to 70mph on motorways. Beware that undertaking is not illegal in the US; to stay safe, don’t forget to signal before changing lanes.
Provided there is no oncoming traffic, you can turn right at red traffic lights. At a four-way stop, all cars should stop, and the one that arrived first sets off first followed by the others in the order of arrival.
