When it comes to driving holiday destinations, the Sorrento Coast is hard to beat. Bursting with quaint fishing villages, secluded coastal towns, and some of the most stunning sea views in whole of Italy, it’s a part of the world perfect for an adventure. If you’re planning a getaway to this region, use the Expedia search tool to browse your car hire options today – before you know it, you’ll be sitting in a cliff-top restaurant, sipping an espresso and gazing out at a gorgeous sunset.

Hire a Car at Naples Airport (NAP)

The easiest way to reach the coast of Sorrento is to fly into Naples International Airport (NAP). This airport is located about 20 miles northwest of Castellammare di Stabia, a town on the eastern edges of the Sorrento Coast and an excellent place to start your driving holiday. At the terminal, you’ll be able to hire a vehicle from a number of different agencies, including Europcar and Alamo. One thing to note if you rent a car here is that the route from Naples International to the Sorrento Coast incorporates toll roads. However, this journey will take you past Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii, two of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire country.

Rent a Car in Sorrento

If you do not hire a vehicle at the airport, and you wish to drive along the Sorrento Coast – visiting the many towns, villages and attractions along the way – then consider hiring a car in Sorrento itself. The town is home to several car rental offices and also marks an excellent starting point for a tour of the region.

You can easily reach Sorrento by taking a bus or train from Naples Airport or the city centre, which also offers a ferry as an alternative travel option. Once there, you’ll find several agencies to choose from, with many clustered along Corso Italia.

Driving Routes Along the Sorrento Coast

If you have hired a car in Naples, then your best driving route will start in Castellammare di Stabia and take you southwest along the coast towards Sorrento. Between Castellammare di Stabia and Vico Equense, the Via Sorrentino skirts the coast, providing excellent sea views. From Vico Equense, the inland SS145 is the best way to travel on to Sorrento.

If you start out in Sorrento, meanwhile, you may want to begin your route by heading southwest to the cluster of villages on the tip of the peninsula, before looping back up to join the SS145. Though further from the coast, the towns of Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, Colli di Fontanelle and Priora are all delightful places to explore.

Tour Stunning Attractions in Sorrento

Any driving holiday along the Sorrento Coast should incorporate a few days in Sorrento itself. Highlights include the arts and crafts in Museo Correale, a striking cathedral that dates back to the 15th Century, and the town’s colourful harbour. Sorrento is also notable for its local cuisine, which incorporates plenty of fresh fish and seafood, Caprese salad – named for the gorgeous nearby island of Capri – stuffed peppers, and plenty of pasta, pizza and cheese.
