Driving around Nice and the Côte d'Azur is the ultimate glamour holiday. Ok, so you may not be in a classic convertible, but let’s imagine… Along a fairly small stretch of coastline are some of the most iconic destinations in Europe.
Cannes, St Tropez and Monaco are all linked by the winding A8, which takes you over fabulous high bridges and through mountain tunnels.
Getting there is simple, and all budgets are catered for. You can fly in to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, which is just a 13-minute drive from the city centre.
Or travel in style and try the Monte Carlo International Heliport, which is a 30-minute drive
Nice is also just 18 miles from the Italian border, so it is easily incorporated into a grand European tour.
Nice car hire is simple, with branches of the big rental car firms at the airport, or in town. Europcar, Enterprise and Sixt are all there, alongside firms like Firefly Car Rental and Truche. Or opt for something luxurious from one of the many high-end Nice car rental companies like Rent a Classic Car, or MC Luxury Rental.
Once you’re in Nice enjoy the glorious Bay of Angels. The sweeping seafront has all the elegance, sunshine and light that the French Riviera is famous for. There are plenty of markets to stroll around, with picturesque stalls making the abundant fruit and vegetables look more enticing than ever. Head to the winding streets of Nice old town for authentic local restaurants and brasseries and don’t forget to look up to fully enjoy the architecture and its sunshine hues of gold and red.
But with so much on your doorstep, take the time to leave Nice in a hire car and enjoy a trip out for the day. Antibes is about 40 minutes away, or 14 miles from Nice - either join the main A8 or the slightly slower but beautiful coastal road. Again, there is the cobbled old town, beaches and great shopping.
Another half-hour down the road is Cannes. The roads here are busy and slow-moving, but on the plus side that gives you time to get your bearings and avoid getting lost. They are also in a fairly simple grid pattern, all leading down to the famous seafront with all of its designer shops, flash hotels and beach bars. Monaco is also just over 30 minutes, or 13 miles, in a car from Nice. The relatively tiny principality is tightly packed with high-rise apartment blocks and hotels so popular with millionaires and those who love people watching.
Be warned, on-street parking is near impossible, but car parks are plentiful, so brave it and take the opportunity to navigate the area's legendary roads.
