The first thing you’ll notice when your plane touches down in Fiji is the difference in time. It’s not that Fiji is 12 hours ahead of the UK but something rather subtler. In Fiji time seems to pass much more slowly – nothing seems so pressured or so hurried.
There’s nothing for it but to slip down a gear and relax.
The same is very much true when you hire a car in Fiji. This is not going to be about covering ground fast. It’s going to be about driving in the slow lane, windows down, enjoying the views.
And what views!
Dazzling sands, perfect palm trees and luminescent waters lapping in and out of bays. Of course, there’s just as much to see underneath the water as there is above it – psychedelically coloured reefs shelter more than 1,500 species of fish. Throw that snorkel in the hire car because there are going to be plenty of opportunities to pull over and see what lies beneath.
Sounds like paradise?
Then let’s get you a car so you can get exploring.
Book your car hire in Fiji with Expedia and we’ll arrange for it to be waiting for you at the airport, whether you are flying in to Nadi International Airport or Nausori International Airport.
Nadi International Airport is the main international airport in Fiji, located on the west coast of Viti Levu. It’s a seven–mile drive from Nadi and a 13–mile drive from Lautoka. If you are based in the capital of Suva, however, it’s a long 120–mile drive south to here.
The airport that more directly serves the capital is Nausori International Airport (also known as Luvuluvu). From here to Suva is only a 16–mile drive.
If you want to hire a car in Fiji but have already arranged your transfer from the airport, Expedia can also arrange for your car to be picked up at several towns, cities and resorts.

As some initial ideas for travelling around Fiji on a self–drive holiday, here are some of the places you may consider visiting on its main island of Viti Levu.
Nadi Town has a rich Indo–Fijian culture that is immediately on display. A short drive from here you can find the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, where you can combine admiring the beautiful orchid collection with a walk through the lush, verdant rainforest.
Setting off in your hire car southeast from Nadi will bring you to the Coral Coast. Here there’s so much to see, but do remember you are on Fijian time, so try not to rush!
At the Sigatoka Valley you can follow the banks of a river to Lawai Village, where traditional Fijian handicrafts and authentic pottery can be appreciated.
If you’re looking for something with a bit more thrills and spills, take a jet boat on the river as you glide through the pristine scenery.
Families will love Kula Eco Park where native birdlife and an aquarium showcasing marine life can be seen.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park offers you the South Sea version of Lawrence of Arabia as miles and miles of dunes stretch away into the distance.
From the Coral Coast you can drive into the bustling capital of Fiji, Suva. This is where you can visit the Fiji Parliament Building and explore the colourful Suva market.
It’s time now to head north. At the northwest tip of Viti Levu is the unspoilt Rakiraki, home to Volivoli Beach, one of Fiji’s best kept secrets. This is the Fiji you have dreamed of: white sandy beaches, coral reef, water sports and sun. There’s some of the best diving and snorkelling accessible from here, too.
Scare yourself silly if you need a break from the beach by visiting the tomb of UdreUdre – a Fijian chief who was known as ’the world’s most prolific cannibal’. During the 19th century he is said to have eaten 99 people!
Things are more tranquil at Nananu I Ra, a nearby island popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing. It’s also known in ancient Fijian myth as the point of departure for the afterlife.
Driving back from Rakiraki to Nadi will take you past sugar cane fields and green pastoral land. On one side will be the coast and on the other majestic mountains. It’s a typical view for Fiji.
Also typical – although rarely seen anymore – the picturesque thatched roof village of Navala. Head up the mountains on your way to Nadi to visit.
And so ends your car hire in Fiji – until next time!
