Must-sees within an easy drive of Buffalo

Niagara Falls may steal Buffalo’s thunder, but this city still has much to offer. Architecture fans can see seven Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings here, otherwise check out Frederick Law Olmsted’s impressive urban parks. For shopping Elmwood village offers independent names and artisan markets, and you can fill up at Food Truck Tuesday at Larkin Square with a choice of tasty dinners.

But if it is Niagara Falls that you’re after (and it probably is), then you are in the right place. The falls lie on the border of the US and Canada and there are a number of different viewing options. If you are travelling by car head towards Rainbow Bridge and the Niagara Falls state park on the American side. Or drive over the bridge to Canada and try one of the various viewing platforms on the banks of the Niagara river. If you do plan to cross the border you will need to take your passport and apply for any relevant visas in advance.

You could also take the opportunity to visit New York’s beautiful Finger Lakes region. Drive among the 11 lakes, which are connected by rivers to Lake Ontario. With a variety of walking trails, lush woodland, water sports and wineries, this region caters for every holiday traveller. The city of Rochester is 75 miles northeast of Buffalo, on the shore of Lake Ontario and is a short drive from the Finger Lakes. The city also boasts a huge collection of lilacs at Highland Park and an annual lilac festival each May. Syracuse, a 150-mile drive of two hours and 30 minutes from Buffalo, is also in the lakes region. Situated on the south bank of Onondaga lake, Syracuse is a convenient base. If you fancy a trip to the Big Apple, be aware that it may be in the same state, but Buffalo is a hefty six-hour, 370-mile drive from New York city. The other option is to take a flight of one hour and 20 minutes from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Tips and tricks for driving in Buffalo
