Spain is a country boasting many beautiful islands, resort towns and sun-drenched cities – but there’s just something extra special about Mallorca. This gorgeous island in the Balearics is known for its beaches and tourist-friendly hotels and attractions. But if you dig a little deeper and you’ll find it’s also a haven for nature lovers, foodies and history buffs. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to travel to Mallorca with flights bringing well over 20 million passengers to the island’s international airport each year.

Fly to Mallorca Island’s Palma Airport (PMI)

Mallorca has only one commercial international airport, and it is located just outside the island’s capital, Palma. Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is one of the busiest airports in Europe during the summer months with regular flights from a number of destinations around Europe. Major airlines such as British Airways, Vueling, Thomson Airways, Ryanair and Iberia all operate from its terminals. Palma de Mallorca Airport is also very well equipped for tourists and travellers – it's home to a variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars.

How to Travel Around Mallorca

After arriving at Palma de Mallorca, you’ll find multiple options for travelling around the island. You can easily hire a car at the airport, or make use of the island’s many train lines, all of which run from the Palma Intermodal Station. To get to this station from the airport, just hop in a taxi or jump on the airport bus, which runs around every 15 minutes. From Palma, you can take the metro to the outskirts of the city, or catch a train as far as the towns of Inca and Manacor. The historic Ferrocarril de Soller railway line also offers scenic transport between Palma and the small town of Soller. For all other destinations, you can use the island’s public buses.

Visit Tourist Attractions on Mallorca Island

A good place to start your trip to Mallorca is in the capital of Palma. Here you’ll find the Gothic Palma Cathedral, the hilltop Bellver Castle, and the gorgeous Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Party animals seeking the thriving local nightlife scene will want to head to the beach resort of Magaluf, while keen historians should make time for the medieval walled city of Alcudia, which is home to San Jaume Church and the ruins of a Roman town. The beautiful coastal village of Deia is also well worth a visit if you’re a fan of literature, as it was once the home of English poet and novelist Robert Graves.
