Katane Palace Hotel

Katane Palace Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"Great location, secure. Friendly professional staff allowed us to check in early thank you. Comfortable clean room and bed. Crisp sheets/linens. Was expecting more Sicilian fare for breakfast, catered too much to North American diet. Not a deal breaker as delicious pasticceria on the street corner. Has so much potential as the courtyard is charming. Overall would recommend. Felt welcome and well looked after. Thank you!"

"We thoroughly enjoyed our 3-day stay at Etna Suites. Alberto and his staff are fantastic and maintain a beautiful and welcoming boutique hotel right on the central street of Catania. Step outside, and within a few minutes you’re in the heart of the cultural and gastronomic center. At the same time, the property is very quiet. Special shoutout for the incredible breakfast!"

Palazzo Bruca Catania

Palazzo Bruca Catania

10/10 Excellent
"I would highly recommend this place. It is near the heart of activity in the historic area. This gives you easy access to not only the Cathedral of Saint Agatha and other nearby landmarks, but also great restaurants and bistros. The streets are a little rough but I always felt safe. The elevator became a little comical with guests forgetting to shut both sets of doors upon exiting. We heard people on floor 2 discussing whether to intentionally leave the doors open. Thankfully they did not. The room was beautifully decorated. The bed and linens were very comfortable and luxurious. The staff was extremely helpful and gracious. They really made us feel cared for and helped us figure out an alternative travel plan when our flight out of Catania has been canceled due to airport closure. We will always remember the kindness of the staff and their driver. I would highly recommend this B&B as a great place to rest, relax and restore after a busy day out in Catania."

"I ended up being stranded due to the airport closure. I booked my hotel on Expedia in a rush at the airport and when I arrived it turned out I book it for October. The staff were wonderful and accommodated me as they could see I was in stressed safe. I then had to extend my stay as the airport was closed another day, I changed my room to a suite and the suite was incredible, totally amazing and was glad I got to experience it The staff made my stay so compassionate and understanding. Thank you so much to the front desk team ladies."

Liberty Hotel

Liberty Hotel

"By far one of the best experiences I’ve had in a hotel. The staff member that helped us was extremely helpful with food recommendations (he recommended Trattoria u Fucularu, HIGHLY worth it), made delicious limoncello spritzes, and helped coordinate taxis for us to get to the bus station the next day. The rooms were stunning. We could feel that this once was a villa and the style was reminiscent of early 1920s/30s. The lights in each area of the hotel were similar to Cala Lillies. The covered terrace was so relaxing and a great place to sip our drinks. Overall, we had a great experience at this hotel and I know where we will be staying when we come back to Catania."

"The room was excellent. The location is perfect and all staff were very helpful with a particular shout out to Flavia who helped us on checkout. The rooftop restaurant is exceptional and worth going up for a drink at sunset if nothing else."

Find out more about Catania

Pocket Guide: Sicily Catania Hotels

Sicily’s second-largest city fizzes with energy, its big student population bringing a buzz to Catania’s historic UNESCO-listed centre. There are centuries of history in Catania going back to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, yet the city is lively and energetic. Wander through the busy squares where stately Baroque palaces add to the city’s beauty.

Mount Etna simmers and smokes in the background, its snow-capped peak never really out of sight. It’s the tallest active volcano in Europe, and its black lava stone, which flowed through the streets after a 17th-century eruption, went into the creation of many of Catania’s Baroque palaces and buildings.

Things to Do in Catania

Start in Piazza del Duomo, Catania’s main square and home to its impressive Baroque cathedral of Sant’Agata. The piazza had to be rebuilt in the 18th Century, after the earthquake, and the result is one of the most handsome squares in Sicily. You can’t help but spot the giant lava fountain in the shape of an elephant with an obelisk on its back – it’s the symbol of the city and a popular meeting place.

Take a stroll through the surrounding streets, past the Baroque buildings before eventually ending up at the ruins of the third-century Roman amphitheatre. Or head down beyond the port where the long sandy beach stretches for 11 miles and offers plenty of places to spread your towel or rent a sun lounger.

Where to Stay in Catania

There’s a hotel for every budget in Catania, as well as in the villages that hug the coast or lie within the green foothills of Mount Etna. There’s everything from homely, family-run B&Bs in old palaces to grand hotels with pools and access to beaches along the Ionian coast. You could find yourself in the heart of the city, where 18th-century architecture and atmospheric ancient ruins are on your hotel’s doorstep.

Where to Eat in Catania

Fans of street food will be spoilt for choice among Catania’s markets and the food stalls by the Porta Uzeda and in Piazza Federico di Svevia. Save room for one of Sicily’s tastiest snacks, arancini – deep-fried balls of risotto rice with mozzarella or other goodies tucked inside. The fish market in Via Pardo is a fantastic spectacle – a noisy, riotous affair that’s not to be missed. Handily, the market is surrounded by excellent trattorias specialising in – what else? – fresh seafood.

Shopping in Catania

Head north from Piazza del Duomo and lose yourself among the shops along Via Etnea. You’ll find all of the big national and international chains as well as department stores and small, independent shops. If you need a breather, relax in the cool gardens of the Giardino Bellini.

After soaking up Catania’s culture and the Sicilian sun, you’ll find plenty of choice of appealing hotels wherever you stay. Whether it’s in the city, the Mount Etna region or any of the nearby coastal villages, you’ll find somewhere that will suit your needs.
