Pocket Guide: Castleton

The hamlet of Castleton in Wales is like a gentle sigh between the urban commotion of Cardiff and Newport, and it is perfect for those who like their country getaways local. Just a short drive from both cities, Castleton makes a quiet retreat with fresh country air and some unbeatable landscapes.

You could be gracing the fairways at one of Castleton’s two golf courses, soaking up some local history and culture at the recently renovated Tredegar House or just enjoying a brisk stroll through the picturesque woodland by the Rhymney River. Whether you’re here for business or pleasure, Castleton has something on offer for everyone.

History in Castleton

No trip to Wales would be complete without a little local history. In this case, Tredegar House is just the ticket. This 17th century country mansion was built during the reign of Charles II and remained in the hands of a single family for over 500 years! Now a Grade I listed building, Tredegar offers guided tours and also hosts numerous family friendly events throughout the year, including a 1930s garden party in the summer, Christmas fairs and Halloween events.

Golf in Castleton

Why not practice your swing at one Castleton’s golf clubs? St. Mellon’s Golf Club parkland course is over a century old and was designed by one of the top golf course landscapers of the time. It is known for its challenging route, excellent function rooms and congenial staff. The Parc Golf Club is also close by. This modern course is much easier on the beginner golfer but is a great course for enjoying relaxed views over Cardiff Bay.

Walking and Fishing in Castleton

You could also take the country air with a stroll along the Rhymney River. During the Industrial Revolution the river had become highly polluted, but in more recent years it has been cleaned up and is now one of the county’s most striking heritage havens. You can enjoy a peaceful riverside walk through the Park Woods. Rhymney is home to a good population of Brown Trout and Grayling so you could even head out fishing.

Architecture in Castleton

Art historians will definitely want to pay a visit the imposing Castleton Baptist Church in the hamlet’s centre, as it is the region’s best example of 19th century polychrome brickwork. It has a remarkable stained glass window on its southwest side and excellent examples of Florentine stonework in the upper reaches of its side windows, meaning it’s quite a sight to behold.

Dining in Castleton

You’re bound to work up an appetite, so sate your hunger with some hearty grub at Castleton’s excellent carvery pub. If you’re in the mood for a light bite, head to Castleton’s delicatessen, which is renowned in the area. A cosy eating spot, the owners are passionate about food and regularly host themed restaurant nights.
