Climb to the lofty viewing tower of this cathedral commissioned in 1717 and completed in 1838. Inspect the crypt, carved choir and impressive dome painting.

Cádiz Cathedral is an 18th-century architectural masterpiece that took more than a century to build. Trade between Spain and the Americas generated the funds to build this spectacular church during a golden age for the city. Admire the blend of styles giving Cádiz Cathedral its strong character.

The cathedral’s façade has an intriguing colour palette of a dark brown lower half and a cream top. Inspect the intricacies of this exceptional frontage, with rococo and neoclassical elements on a baroque base. Gaze up at the yellow dome topping the cathedral.

Vicente Acero was the first to design the church in the early 1700s, but he left the project and various other architects worked on it. Note that the church is known as the Catedral Nueva (New Church) in contrast with the older Parish of Santa Cruz nearby.

Enter through the large central portal and enjoy the serene and spacious setting of the tall nave. Capture photos of the golden décor that seems to illuminate the interior. Gaze up at the domed ceiling’s large central painting of angels surrounded by The Last Supper, the Crucifixion and other works. The wooden choir is carved with intricate figures.

Delve into the fascinating crypt and marvel at its intricate ceiling pattern. Here lie the remains of Gaditano composer Manuel de Falla and poet José María Pemán, who were both born in Cádiz.

Climb a steep spiraling ramp to the summit of the Torre de Poniente bell tower for panoramic views of Cádiz, its port and the sea. Learn the history of the cathedral and the city with a guided tour of the adjacent Cathedral Museum.

There is a fee to enter the church, its museum and the bell tower. An audio guide is provided. The cathedral opens from morning until evening Monday through Saturday and from afternoon until late on Sunday.

The Cádiz Cathedral is on the southern end of its namesake plaza in the historic centre of the city. Get around this fascinating area on foot. Visit the myriad landmarks within a few blocks, including the Arco de la Rosa and the Parish de Santa Cruz.
