Breukelen has always been a small town and had just 1,000 inhabitants until the 19th century. Today, the town has considerably more inhabitants, but is still not a city. As an aside, New York's borough Brooklyn got its name from the town of Breukelen.
Breukelen is rural, close to a number of castles, not all too far from a few cities and also has a lot to offer. People-watch while enjoying a drink at a sidewalk café, stroll around the picturesque streets and take in the 15th-century Pieterskerk.
The impressive Castle Nijenrode in Breukelen itself is complete with moat and drawbridge and currently home to a business university. Just outside of town in Haarzuilens lies another gem, De Haar Castle. This enchanting castle with its round towers and red and white shutters is an absolute must!
Nature lovers will love the Loosdrechtse Plassen, a group of lakes with walking trails and opportunities for bird watching. It's also easy to get to Amsterdam and Utrecht. Shop till you drop on Kalverstraat and then head out to the Jordaan and relax in a typical Amsterdam pub or go to Utrecht and explore the canals and climb the famous Dom tower.
If you prefer to stay close to Breukelen, the area is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. If you're planning to spend a day in Utrecht or Amsterdam, take public transport and enjoy the scenery from the train. The journey is short and comfortable, and parking can be quite expensive in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The journey to Amsterdam takes no more than 30 minutes on the regional train and Utrecht is only 15 minutes away.
If you’re travelling by car, there are different places in Breukelen where you can park for free. For example, at the train station, which is a 15-minute walk from the centre of town.
