Location was great, room was bright and welcoming and the staff were excellent. I was a little frustrated I couldn't get parked at the hotel as it was raining but I was directed to a nearby parking garage and give an umbrella for the walk back.

Pocket Guide: Basler Muenster Basler Muenster Hotels

Pick a hotel near Basel Muenster’s soaring twin spires and you’ll be in a great spot to enjoy one of Basel’s most famous sights. Located high above the river on the south bank of the Rhine, Basel Muenster (a.k.a. Basel Cathedral) stands out from the skyline wherever you are in the city. The stunning red sandstone structure of the cathedral is an instantly recognisable symbol of Basel and a must-snap photo opportunity whether you’re visiting for a few days or staying for a longer break.

Where to Stay near Basel Muenster

There’s a wealth of accommodation near Basel Muenster, whether you choose to stay on the same side of the river as the cathedral or just a short hop away on the north bank of the Rhine. The historic hotels of Basel Old Town are within a few minutes’ walk of Basel Muenster and there’s also plenty of choice near the train station, which is about 15 minutes’ away on foot or less than 10 minutes on the tram. If you choose a hotel in Kleinbasel on the north side of the river, why not get a unique view of the cathedral by catching the ferry across the river direct to Basel Muenster?

Explore Basel’s Famous Landmark

Choosing a hotel near Basel Muenster will put you on the doorstep of one of the city’s historical and architectural highlights. The cathedral was built between 1019 and 1500 in Romanesque and Gothic styles, using the distinctive local red sandstone. Construction of the cathedral suffered a major setback in 1356, when a great earthquake brought down its two towers. Fortunately for modern visitors to Basel, the towers were painstakingly reconstructed, and the building was extended in 1421 and again in 1500.

On your visit to Basel Muenster you can explore quiet, atmospheric cloisters, admire lovely views of the Rhine from the Pfalz terrace, or simply watch the world go by in the cathedral square, a popular meeting place for locals. If you’re feeling energetic, try climbing the 250 steps up to the top of one of the towers for panoramic views of Basel.
