The historic market town of Banbury lies on the River Cherwell, in Oxfordshire, along the edge of the spectacular Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a pretty place, lined with winding streets flanked by 19th-century stone and slate cottages, meandering canals plied by narrowboats, and old pubs, one of which was supposedly where Oliver Cromwell planned the Battle of Edge Hill. Don't just confine yourself to town, though. The nearby rolling hills are criss-crossed with hiking trails and dotted with medieval castles and stately National Trust homes. It doesn't matter whether you're on a romantic break or you're bringing the whole family on a weekend getaway, you'll find things to do for all ages.
In such a quaint town, hotels just seem so out of place. Fortunately, there are plenty of cosy bed and breakfasts in Banbury that are just the ticket. If you're looking for home comforts, friendly hosts and excellent service, you won't be disappointed. Many of the owners have run their B&Bs for years and are more than happy to help you plan your weekend break. If you're sold on a B&B in Banbury, look through Expedia, which lists every property, along with detailed descriptions and photos. All you need to do is plug in your dates, location and budget, scan through the listings and book in just a few clicks. You're spoilt for choice when it comes to B&Bs. Some are traditional cottages with just a limited number of guestrooms. Others are a little more luxurious, with traditional decor and antiques. There are several budget options if you'd prefer to save your cash for the attractions or restaurants. Whichever you pick, you're always guaranteed a comfortable stay when you book through Expedia.
Guestrooms in Banbury bed and breakfasts come in all shapes and sizes, but you can expect most to come with all the modern conveniences that you might find in a hotel. Some may have a flat-screen TV on the wall, complimentary WiFi and a kettle for making hot drinks. Others come with ensuite bathrooms stocked with toiletries and towels. If you pick right, you could score a room overlooking the canal and wake up to the sight of narrowboats passing by. Alternatively, bring the kids along to stay in one of the family-sized rooms. If you want to take your dogs walking in the Cotswolds, you could opt for one of the pet-friendly B&Bs. Come daybreak, you can head downstairs for a proper English breakfast, the perfect way to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. If you're looking for a completely different type of weekend break, perhaps activities in Bristol might be more your speed.
There are plenty of things to do near your Banbury bed and breakfast, like floating down the Oxford Canal on a narrowboat or swinging by Tooley's Boatyard to learn about Banbury's history. For more history, you could drive out to the 13th-century Broughton Castle, which is surrounded by a moat. First timers in Banbury shouldn't miss trying an authentic Banbury Cake, a spicy, fruity pastry that has been made in the town for more than a century, or taking a tour of the Hook Norton Brewery. If you're feeling active, head out to the Cotswolds, where you can go hiking or mountain biking in the rolling hills and woodland, perhaps stopping off in one of the country pubs for a drink and a spot of lunch.
