Kuta is a city known for boundless energy and a lively, exciting atmosphere. But it is also beautifully close to quieter pockets of Bali’s south coast, where you can swap endless activity for absolute serenity. Balangan Beach is a flawless stretch of white sand, trimmed by sheltering cliffs and swaying palm trees. It is just secret enough to be completely unspoiled yet easily reached from Kuta’s wide range of accommodation including luxury spa hotels, beachfront suites, aparthotels, traditional bed and breakfasts, heritage guesthouses and good-value hostels.
Balangan Beach has long been a favourite with surfers, so a big part of the charm here is a sense of carefree relaxation. There are parasols and loungers for hire, but only if you want them. Excellent home cooking is served up in quaint beach shacks which stand on stilts looking out to sea. You can even brave Balangan’s gentler waves with the help of the small local surf school.
The broad expanses of sand reaching down to the sea are idyllic for romantic strolls with stunning views. But the beach is also fantastic for families. Young children love the shore’s vast playground, and the calm clear waters are safe enough to swim in most of the day. Naturally, it is a different story when the surf is up. Balangan Beach is renowned for long rides, and seeing skilled surfers riding almost all the way back to Kuta on a single wave is an unforgettable experience.
The north side of Balangan Beach is the busier end and also where you’ll find the traditional Pura Darem Balanga. This pretty Balinese temple and a few hand-painted signs advertising fresh juice are the only distractions from natural loveliness on the entire beach. If you plan to spend the day here, don’t forget to linger long enough to see the spectacular sunset. As the sky begins to turn all kinds of beautiful shades of gold and orange, you’ll be glad you stuck around to see it.
