Augusta
Travel Guide

Get a good dose of Southern charm in this beautiful city in northeastern Georgia. Explore the Savannah River or visit homes of the city’s famous historical figures.

Augusta is a beautiful city along the Savannah River in Georgia’s heartland. This region in the middle of the state is known for its Southern hospitality; Augusta is no exception.

The city was founded during the British colonial period. It escaped much of the destruction during the Civil War. Look for gorgeous antebellum mansions presiding over its tree-lined streets.

Augusta is located on the lazy Savannah River. Rent a kayak or canoe to explore or go fishing. Learn about the river’s rich canal heritage during a boat tour or a sunset cruise. Biking and hiking trails wind alongside the river and through the surrounding forests.

The Augusta Riverwalk gives visitors the chance to enjoy the scenery while partaking in the city’s cultural delights. Attend a concert in the amphitheater next to the Savannah River or have a leisurely dinner at a riverside restaurant.

The Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson, where Wilson and his family lived during the Civil War, is Georgia’s oldest presidential home. Explore the manor’s stately rooms, displaying original furniture that the future president used in his everyday life.

Fly through history at the Museum of Aviation, one of the Southeast’s largest museums of flight. View over 90 historic aircraft and missiles.

Visit the secluded Andalusia, the home of American author and essayist Flannery O’Connor; enjoy nature at its Outdoor Learning Center. Continue the literary theme at the Uncle Remus Museum at Turner Park. The museum explores the life and work of author Joel Chandler Harris, who worked at Turner Park as a young apprentice. He drew inspiration from the slave stories he heard here to create his beloved Uncle Remus and "Little Man" tales.

Augusta is a 3-hour drive from Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. You can also fly into Augusta's regional airport.

For a relaxing day enjoying the Georgia sunshine, take a stroll downtown. Restaurants, shops and galleries line the streets. Augusta makes you understand why this part of the country earns its reputation for Southern charm.
