"This was by far the most unique, amazing hotel we stayed at on the island of Crete. Upon arrival we were given fresh-squeezed lemonade made from their own lemon trees. The staff was so friendly! The building is over 500 years old, and nothing like I've ever seen before. The suite we got was huge, (living room, full kitchen, dining room, and bathroom downstairs and 2 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs). We had our own private patio and a back door that led right to the pool. The town and the people...

Grecotel LUX ME White

10/10 Excellent

"I had the immense pleasure of staying at Grecotel Lux*Me White for one week in mid-October, sharing a double room with two single beds with my 14-year-old son. To say this was quite possibly the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in would be an understatement. Amazing staff, a great location just 15 minutes from Rethymno, and a complimentary daily shuttle bus departing the hotel at 11 am and returning to pick you up at 3 pm. What more could you ask for? The hotel amenities are exceptional, from breakfast, lunch and dinner to drinks and snacks throughout the day. The staff are absolutely brilliant and spare no effort in making their guests’ stays truly memorable. I had several jaw-dropping moments during our stay, too many to list, but one that really stood out was seeing a full-sized honeycomb served at breakfast. That alone should give you a small idea of the exceptional service and experience this hotel offers. Honestly, I cannot recommend it highly enough. The highlight of the trip for me was the evening spent at the hotel’s own organic farm. Utter luxury."

The Royal Senses Resort & Spa Crete, Curio Collection Hilton

10/10 Excellent

"A fantastic hotel with an outstanding team who truly go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. The attention to detail is exceptional, and every aspect of the experience is thoughtfully taken care of. From arrival to checkout, the staff make every effort to ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable stay. Their genuine hospitality and commitment to guest satisfaction really set this property apart. Highly recommended!"

Nautilux Rethymno by Mage Hotels

8/10 Good

"Over all hotel is nice , Everyone working here was nice and kind . Anyhow for 5 star hotel shower enclosure is only 2 stars…. It is no door from living area to the bathroom,so it is crazy cold when you get out from the shower, and enclosure itself is ridiculously uncomfortable, Other thing -guests are allowed to smoke in a balcony,no separation between smoking and nonsmoking rooms,so you will smell disgusting cigarette smoke all day long… Also -5 star hotel does not have heated pool ,so October 12 th pool temperature was 15 degrees Celsius-that is absolutely ridiculous…please invest some money for your pool heating,so guests, who paid for 5 star hotel can enjoy it …"

Oros Luxury Beach Resort

8/10 Good

"We had a deluxe villa with own pool. It was just a shame due to staying later in the season, we did not get the sun on our loungers and the pool was very cold. (Still tried it though!!) Suite was lovely, Breakfast was good, lots of choice. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Resort is close to main road, which was a bit annoying if sitting out. Overall though, could not fault the resort. However, walked along the nearest beach, and was very disappointed with the amount of rubbish and plastic around. Shame our tourist tax isn't helping with that!!"

Fata Morgana Studios & Apartments

8/10 Good

"Stayed in the split level rooms. Rather dated and a little overpriced . Stay in the new wing overlooking the pool and ocean for a better experience and value. We asked to change room and it wasn’t an issue. The access to a free washing machine was a great touch. Great service and friendly staff."

Aquila Rithymna Beach

8/10 Good

"BEAUTIFUL MAINTAINED GROUNDS. FRIENDLY HELPFUL STAFF. WE HAD A PARTIAL SEA VIEW BUNGALOW - THE VIEW WAS GOOD & BUNGALOWS ARE LOCATED IN A QUITE PART OF THE RESORT. LOVED OUR BALCONY ( RM 30). MAIN CRITICISM OF THE ROOM IS THE OVER BATH SHOWER. WHOEVER PLANNED PUTTING THE TAPS IN THE CENTRE OF THE BATH AS WELL AS THE WIRE RACK & SOAP DISPENSERS HAS NEVER TRIED TO STAND TAKING A SHOWER IN THE BATH WHILST FIGHTING THE PLASTIC SHOWER SHEET - IT IS DANGEROUS . I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW HEAVIER / LARGER PEOPLE MANAGE IT!!. RECEPTION - VERY RESPONSIVE TO ANY REQUESTS IE COFFEE NOT TOPPED UP WAS QUICKLY RESOLVED. RESORT AMENITIES: POOLS BEAUTIFUL & WELL MAINTAINED. AQUA PARK GOOD FUN. BARS/RESTAURANTS: MAIN BUFFET BREAKFAST - EXCELLENT FOOD CHOICES BUT VERY BUSY. BETTER OPTION HAVE BREAKFAST IN PERGOLA SIDE - TABLES WIDER SPACED - FEELS LESS HECTIC. LOVED THE GREEK RESTAURANT / FOOD & STAFF. AL A CARTE RESTAURANT LOVELY. BEACH BAR - LOVELY DRINKS BUT UNDER STAFFED SO SERVICE CAN BE VERY VERY SLOW!!! SERVICE AT MAIN BAR POOR WHEN ON LOWER LEVEL. FAILED TO BE SERVED OUR DRINKS ON 3 OCCASIONS WHEN ORDERED DOWNSTAIRS. RESORT IS VERY CHILD FRIENDLY. WOULD I GO BACK - PERSONALLY THINK THE AI PACKAGE IS OVERPRICED AND THE ROOMS ARE NOT REALLY 5*. IN SPITE OF THIS WE REALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY"

Grecotel Plaza Beach House

10/10 Excellent

"We booked a room at the last minute. There will a little mix up upon arrival but the hotel upgraded us and bought us dinner to compensate us. Honestly, there was no need. The hotel was fabulous and the staff could not have been friendlier. The beach area was perfect and exactly what we wanted during our time in Greece. Rethymno is a lovely town and not nearly as busy as Chania, which made a huge difference. We would definitely go back to this hotel."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Atsipades?

The best area to stay in Atsipades is the village centre itself, particularly for travellers who appreciate a tranquil setting and a genuine Cretan experience.

Atsipades is a small, traditional village located in the hills of Crete. The village centre is characterised by its stone houses, narrow, winding streets, and a slower pace of life. You'll find a few local tavernas and a mini-market, offering a real sense of local community. The surrounding landscape is dominated by olive groves and offers stunning views of the countryside.

Couples looking for a peaceful escape will find Atsipades ideal. It's great for relaxing, enjoying the local cuisine, and taking scenic walks through the olive groves. The village offers a quiet base away from the more bustling tourist areas, allowing for a truly restful holiday.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the area around the village centre provides access to lovely walking trails. You can explore the local flora and fauna, discover hidden chapels, and enjoy panoramic views of the Rethymno region.

When is the best time to go to Atsipades?

The best time to visit Atsipades is during the shoulder seasons of late April to early June or September to October.

These periods offer pleasant temperatures, ideal for exploring the Cretan countryside and enjoying the island's many outdoor activities. You'll find the weather warm enough for swimming in the sea and relaxing on the beaches, but without the intense heat and larger crowds of the peak summer months. This balance ensures a more relaxed and comfortable experience, whether you're hiking, visiting archaeological sites, or simply enjoying the local gastronomy.

For those looking for the warmest weather and don't mind more people, July and August are also suitable. During these months, the sea is at its warmest, and the island is bustling with activity. However, temperatures can be very high, and popular attractions will be busier.
