Apollo has been my favorite place in Amsterdam for the past 10 years or so. Recently, it has become very expensive, just like everything else, so I can't complain. When it comes to the price, it's always worth paying more to stay in a canal view room, but it's a bit of a lottery, as rooms with a very limited view of the canal are still considered canal view.
Another issue is the city tax, which is charged during check-in, but sometimes they also ask for it during check-out, so make sure to get a receipt if you pay the tax during check-in. Also, check your credit card statement to see if you've received the security deposit back. If not, you may need to make a call.
During my 5-night stay when it was very hot, the bedding was not changed, which is unusual for this hotel. The hotel doesn't have enough room service staff, so you might see one middle-aged lady responsible for cleaning an entire floor in just a few hours. Therefore, be kind to them and leave something nice or a tip in the room.
There are some low-quality fittings and fixtures, so be sure to report them when you check-in. If you don't feel safe, don't hesitate to change rooms.
