Pocket Guide: Albufeira

Albufeira is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the central Algarve.

Albufeira is renowned for its history, warm climate, good food, beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, bars with live music and beautiful hotels.

Things to Do

The Old Town of Albufeira has beautiful religious landmarks, such as the St. Sebastian Hermitage, Sant’Ana church and Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church.

In the Marina of Albufeira you can embark on a boat tour to explore the coastal caves such as Xorino, which served as a shelter for fugitive Moors during the Christian reconquest of Albufeira. Water sports like sailing, windsurfing or diving are also available on most beaches.

Head west of town to play golf at the Balaia Golf Course. Located in a four star resort, it’s great for both the game and a little post-match light refreshment.

Explore the Municipal Archaeological Museum and get to know a bit more about the Algarve’s history. Visit the Castle of Paderne, a 12th-century fortification and one of the original castles to display the shield of the Portuguese national flag. Corte-Real gallery is an old home turned into a gallery in Paderne; it displays paintings and ceramics surrounded by a beautiful garden with wild flowers.

Visit Olhos D’Água, a small fishing village located east of Albufeira with a stunning beach where water springs gush up from the sand flats at low tide.

Stop at Zoomarine in Guia: a water park dedicated to the conservation of marine life, which offers entertainment for all the family. Don’t forget to taste Guia’s typical spicy chicken or one of the many amazing seafood specialities of Albufeira, such as the seafood rice.

Albufeira is only about a 40-minute drive from the international airport of Faro. The city can be used as an initial base to further explore other cities such as Lagos, Vilamoura or Armação de Pera.

If you are looking for a little retail therapy you can stay in a hotel in Algarve Shopping, an open-air shopping centre with many retail outlets, cinemas and a supermarket. Here you can find international and national brands, as well as local souvenirs.

Where to Stay in Albufeira

If you are looking for top nightlife, stay in a hotel near Areias de São João, also known as 'The Strip', where you’ll find all the best bars and open-air nightclubs.

If all you want is a good, old-fashioned beach holiday, Albufeira has you covered. It has twenty Blue Flag beaches, with the best known being Salgados, Evaristo, Aveiros, Oura, Stª Eulália , Maria Luísa, Olhos d’água, Belharucas, Falésia and Rocha Baixinha.

Whether you want an affordable hotel located near the town centre or a luxury five star hotel right on Falésia Beach, Albufeira has plenty of options that will most certainly suit your needs.
