Nestled in the Southern Highlands, Penrose invites nature lovers to explore the magical Glow Worm Glen and wander through Morton National Park's pristine wilderness. Golf enthusiasts can perfect their swing at Sylvan Glen Golf Course while garden admirers shouldn't miss the exquisite plantings at Red Cow Farm Garden.

Swaggin' it in style at the Penrose State Forest.

Usually it's a little too close to home to spend a night out there, so I hadn't spent much time exploring. Turns out it's well worth the drive, since there are some fantastic bush camping sites not far off the beaten track and it's much quieter than the nearby Wingello State Forest, which is a bit of a mecca for mountainbikers. However, unlike Wingello, there are zero facilities so take a shovel.

Plenty of wildlife too if you're looking for some of our more iconic Aussie critters such as wallabies, kangaroos and koalas. If you're patient and quiet you'll no doubt spot a bunch of native animals.

Definitely worth a visit if you're travelling between Sydney and Canberra or Melbourne and need a quick, free overnight stop.
