Pocket Guide: 1 Star Hotels in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg may not instantly spring to mind when thinking of a budget holiday, yet many cheap accommodation and dining options are now springing up throughout the city. As for sightseeing, wandering the historic city streets and taking in the various Rococo and Neoclassicist facades can while away a many happy hours. It’s even worth visiting Metro and train stations, many of which are palatial in style and are some of the best examples of Stalinist architecture.
Pair a visit to a train station with a ride out west, along the Gulf of Finland to the seafront royal palace and gardens of Peterhof. Trains from the city centre to the suburb are reasonably priced, but if your budget allows, you could also hop on a hydrofoil boat to take in city vistas from the River Neva. Entrance into the palace and outer buildings at Peterhof can be pricey, but most of the gardens and Grand Cascade fountains are free to wander around. More great photo ops include the historic Potseluev Bridge and its panoramic views of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and the vast Winter Palace and Gardens, also next to the River Neva and dominating Palace Square.
Eat in St. Petersburg's on a Budget
Russian cuisine is hearty and filling and, despite the city’s reputation for its posh caviar and high-end vodka, it’s possible to eat well on a budget. Traditional cafes, fast-food joints and bars have a lot to offer and there are many places to eat along Nevsky Prospekt and its surrounding streets. The canteen-style Market Place serves up a good mix of traditional Russian fare and alongside some international favourites.
To find cheap accommodation in St. Petersburg, you’ll have to head away from the centre, out of walking distance from most of the main sights and and landmarks. Thanks to the city’s extensive and efficient public transport network, getting around is rarely an issue. A handful of hostels and mini-hotels are dotted along the bustling Nevsky Prospekt. Although cheaper places to stay are mainly at the far-end of the main tourist area, you won’t be more than a couple of Metro stops from the likes of Palace Square and St. Isaac's Cathedral.
