“Only for the Intrepid Traveller”
The bad news is my room was one hundred feet from an elevated train line. The good news is that the windows were adequately soundproofed. The good news is this hotel is in exotic Chinatown. The bad news is this is an alien environment for most people. The good news is my room was clean. Bad news--it was small.
“Good value, convenient location, felt safe”
We chose a noisy room (as opposed to a quieter room with no windows). The passing train was close but felt like background noise to us. The free coffee in the lobby was instant coffee. The TV had no sound on a major channel. The windows really didn't have a great view. The staff was helpful. We were okay with it all because we didn't spend much time in the room, really. We were on a budget and found it all charming.
“Good value hotel in Chinatown”
If you want a good value hotel in Chinatown, then this hotel will suit the bill. The hotel is a little run down, feels outdated, and the rooms are small, but presents good value. Being in Chinatown, this area might be a little dirty or unsettling for some travellers.
“Stay Away”
Despite understanding the hotel was on the edge of China Town and manhattan we were disappointed to find it in the middle of china town in what seemed not to be the best of areas. Checking in was fine, but our room on the 6th floor was tiny, dirty around the edges and had a train track 10 meters from the window than ran 24 hours per day over manhattan bridge. Our 4 day break wasn't relaxing with the lack of sleep. The only other available room had no windows so we stayed where we were. On the upside the bed was comfortable albeit small. The subway was a close enough 5 minutes walk, but we didn't do this after dark. Checking out we were asked to pay $2 per bag to store them for 45 minutes after checkout time, which we refused. Definitely wouldn't stay there again or recommend.
“Several Problems”
This hotel is in Chinatown which made it kind of interesting however a cable seemed to have been cut which made the television and the internet stop working. It is a more difficult location to reach other areas of NYC than a more central location.
“Hotel 91 Good Value”
The hotel was extremely clean and the staff was very nice. The location is a bit of problem with the trains running next to the room day and night. Maybe we ended up on the wrong side of the hotel train-wise. If you're looking for a clean room without frills, you couldn't go wrong.
“Take your ear plugs!!”
Good things: 2 blocks to subway with excellent links to Mid/Uptown Manhattan; Efficient quiet air con system in the bedroom; Laundry room on 7th floor (make sure you've plenty of quarters tho'); Fairly good sized room Bad things: The hotel is located immediately adjacent to Manhattan Bridge. The view from our window was of the car, railway and pedestrian thoroughfares. Despite triple glazing the 24 hour rumblings of trains passing was clearly audible. My travel companion could only sleep with the aid of ear plugs, and the curtains had to remain closed while we were in the room; This hotel is right in the middle of Chinatown just off Canal Street and the smells in the morning on the streets from the build up of refuse were stomach turning; We stayed for 9 nights. Although the bathroom was restocked and cleaned everyday, the bedding wasn't changed and the room wasn't hoovered or dusted at all; Inadequate lighting in the bedroom; Only one extremely slow small elevator for everyone; 4 coathangers provided. The wardrobe was a self- assembly effort and the doors would not close;Inadequate storage. We lived out of our suitcases; The iron was unusable - black marks on the plate; No tea/coffee making facilities in bedroom. 24 hour 'facilities' on the 2nd floor consisted of vending machines and powdered coffee/milk; The only ice machine was on the 4th floor and a bottle of water was provided in the room on arrival, but was never replenished; Internet access only via an ethernet cable
“Great hotel in a smelly neighbourhood”
The hotel itself is GREAT! nice room, very clean, very nice staff. The vicinity to the Manhattan bridge is problematic ONLY if your are in the street. Inside the room you almost don't hear a thing as the rooms are doubly double glazed. Excellet choice for the price.
“Clean and Friendly but Very Authentic China Town”
Great value for the money, amazing location in Manhattan if your trying to save a buck and don't mind taking the subway. Very clean and friendly hotel with some great amenities. The only downfall is that it does have a fish smell outside but not at all inside the hotel which we did not mind, it is china town and expected. Nothing unbearable for saving some money and having very friendly neighbors. The chinatown life was very authentic and made if feel as if you were living in Manhattan because you were out of the tourist area which in no more then a 10 minute subway ride to midtown. I will be staying here again.
“Horrible unsafe neighborhood & bed bugs”
This hotel is listed as located in Lower Manhattan which is incorrect. It is in the worst part of china town and unsafe. The surrounding area is filthy and smells like the rotting fish being sold on the sidewalk as you enter/exit the hotel. This hotel also has bed bugs, I have five bites on my ankles from my 3 day stay. If we had not prepaid we would have absolutely not stayed at Hotel 91. As being from Detroit I have seen very bad areas within large cities and this tops the cake. I did not leave the hotel without my husband escorting me for safety concerns.
