Located on the Ruhr River and dating from the ninth century, Mülheim was an important trade centre, prominent in the leather and textile industries, and remains one of the Ruhr region's greenest cities. It features the well-preserved fortifications of the Broich Castle, the 800 year old church of St Peter, and the 13th century Saarn Cloister. There is a camera obscura in the garden near the castle and a municipal museum in the old post office.
