“Super B&B”

We first stayed here 15 years ago. The room is still as comfortable, the service as excellent, and the biscuit with hot sherried fruit as delicious!

“Southern hospitality”

The John Rutledge House Inn was everything I expected and more. Friendly, competent service; comfortable, charming accommodations; an innkeeper who knows how to make everyone feel at home; great breakfasts - the chef even came to our table to give me detailed instructions on how to prepare grits! One evening, after a long day of sightseeing, the concierge graciously accommodated my desire for a pot of tea, even though it was "after hours." The concierges also made dinner reservations for us, and their restaurant recommendations were terrific. The Inn is centrally located in the historic district, and we were able to walk to virtually everything.

“Beautiful Building - Great Location”

The John Rutledge House Inn is located right in the heart of downtown Charleston on Broad Street, and is at a perfect location for walking to most of the major sightseeing attractions in downtown. We were a little disappointed in our room (#1 Butler Pierce) only because it was in the basement level of the house, and although the bed wasn't the most comfortable, the room was very beautifully decorated. We had breakfast served to us every morning in the courtyard, which I would recommend if it is cool enough outside. A few items, such as biscuits with sherried fruit, yoghurt, and cereal are included with the room, and you can order larger breakfasts at an additional cost. The people manning the front desk/concierge were all very helpful with directions and information for local attractions.

“Convenient Locale”

Steeped in history, this quaint inn is situated near King St. shopping and the best historic garden district in the US. We loved taking our excellent breakfasts on the private rear patio and the ever present concierges were very attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful. Our only disappointment was not being able to chose our room as part of a package deal and being placed in a lower-level, semi-basement room, which was nice and spacious, but lesser the elegance of the other rooms in this inn.

“Some things need to be improved.”

I'm not sure if it was because we were on the second floor or not but the hotel staff sometimes forgot about us. We were suppose to have turn down service and they forgot us two nights. We were to put our choice for breakfast on a card and hang it on our door. They only picked it up once (we were there for four breakfasts). Other than those two things the inn was nice.

“Not Impressed”

I stayed with my 13 and 14 year old very mature children. We were in the carriage house. We all agreed that the room in no way matched the pictures on the internet. It was no cozier than any standard hotel room. In addition the towels were threadbare and there were only barely enough for two people. We had to ask for more for our third person even though there was an extra charge for a third person in a two bedroom queen suite. The afternoon tea was way over rated and the in room breakfast was worse than you would get at a Marriot. It was nothing like you would expect at a cozy B&B. We were charged a concierge fee for making a dinner reservation. There was one poorly dressed attendant to carrry bags from a very inconvenient back parking lot who clearly didn't want to carry them. We carried our own and I noticed another family doing the same. When we came back to the hotel after dinner there were no parking spots and the we had to get the concierge to move his personal car from the parking lot to make room for ours - parking was an extra cost. I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone.
