A night out and a night in

Posted 17-Apr-2015
Pros: The staff
Cons: Respect the clients and install sound-proofing. Oh, alright just some windows that work.
Location: A lot of good local bars apparently
My room had not just a street view but the soundtrack to go with it. In their wisdom the architects of this definitely City centre hotel decided to fit floor to ceiling single glazed windows so that a facility designed to accommodate people who predominantly want to sleep would have little chance. My Friday night experience was akin to bedding down on a street corner between Birmingham's favourite drinking establishment and it's largest taxi rank. The downside is that I didn't even get the occasional coin tipped my way. Terrible.

Theatre Break

Posted 11-Apr-2015
Pros: The location was excellent and the staff were friendly. Breakfast is plentiful! You also get complimentary items if you have forgotten something.
Location: Theatres, Shopping, Drinks, Chinatown, Disco Dancing.
We stayed here for a theatre break to see Derren Brown at the Alexander Theatre. Great location - theatre is 2 mins away and so is the Hippodrome, Arcadian Centre and the Bullring. New Street station is also a very short walk away. We enjoyed drinks on the outside terrace bar and after the show. (tip - Cherry Reds is also a nice little bar to watch the world go by) The location is central so there is obviously a level of noise that I see other travellers have complained about - however - ear plugs are provided and I'm really not sure that people have grounds to complain that a city is noisy - surely it comes with the territory? Overall a great stay - thank you.

Great City Centre location but a bit noisy

Posted 28-Feb-2015
Pros: Spacious room.
Cons: Heating controls.
Location: In City Center, conveniently near the Bullring (watch out for the 7.30pm restaurant closing time), ChinaTown, New St Station, Brindley Place etc..
The room was spacious. It was a bit noisy being adjacent to the road. I struggled to understand the heating controls (the printed diagram didn't match the actual control panel & the symbols on the control panel were too small to see) - it's curious that so many hotels fall short on this point. Check in / out was efficient.

Conference venue

Posted 19-Feb-2015
I can count on one hand the reviews I have done ( not many) But this one was worth a mention. I was on my own but the staff were so good it didn't feel like it!! You usual awkwardness of a meal for one was none existent - Great stay, the most amazing steak dinner, attentive staff, spotless room. the only downside was having to close the curtains to shut out the office workers opposite but after 5pm they had gone anyway.

easy walking distance of city centre

Posted 14-Feb-2015
Pros: clean and spacious room , central locality , helpful staff, good overall price for facilities
Cons: more comfortable seating in the room e.g a settee
Location: close to city centre within walking distance of most Birmingham attractions e.g Bullring , theatres, etc.
we stayed for one night prior to flying out of Birmingham International , hotel room was very spacious and clean and provided all we needed. We didn't sample any of the restaurant meals due to our flight time. the hotel staff were all friendly and helpful we had a peaceful night due to having a room at the back of the hotel and did not experience any disruption from the local nightlife would recommend this hotel

Small room with no wifi

Posted 27-Jan-2015
Pros: Quiet and close to every facilities of the city centre.
Cons: Internet facilities. Food. TV services.
I booked it as I thought wifi available. But to my dismay out of 3 days I had total of 49 minutes of wifi access. Hotel gave excuses that they will change the system. Not good enough when you advertise free wifi!

Not as good as I hoped

Posted 25-Jan-2015
Pros: The restaurant offered good choices at decent prices for dinner. I would recommend the hotel on location.
Cons: Breakfast - freshly made pots of tea and coffee, please and fresh fruit that isn't chopped, and porridge.
Location: It seemed a reasonable city centre location - we just ate and slept there and then went about our business the next day.
Finding the car park - for which I had to pay an extra £12, as the hotel doesn't have one of its own - was a job and a half, especially as I've never driven in Birmingham city centre before and it was dark and raining. We then had to haul our cases down steps as the car park lift wasn't working and then walk a short but not terribly pleasant way to the hotel. Once there we were checked in efficiently and found our rooms, which were standard Holiday Inn (quite why this chain can't offer you a biscuit with your tray of DIY tea and coffee I don't know - other chains manage it) and very clean and comfortable. We hurried down to the restaurant to get a meal and found a decent choice of main courses at (for a hotel) reasonable prices. I had the calves' liver and it was only OK - overcooked and in a not incredibly pleasant sauce. My side of rocket and parmesan salad was good. Breakfast next morning was a buffet and had less wide a range of choice than the 3* we'd stayed at in Bradford the day before (no, we're not a rock band, just had business in different places on different days) and DIY tea and coffee (neither of which were very good). At the very least, for the price we paid, I'l expect a pot of freshly made tea or coffee brought to my table. There was no porridge (which the 3* had supplied in a large tureen and very good it was) and fresh fruit was limited to a chopped salad. As I don't do cooked breakfast, there wasn't much choice for me at all.
