- Antalya Luxury holidays
Antalya is a destination rich in history, dating back to Roman times. Use your time in the city as a chance to explore not just the landscape of the surrounding area, but the history of it too, as you step back through the ages to imagine landmarks as they once were, and some of the famous faces that may have stepped in your footprints centuries before your arrival.
Antalya - a theatre of dreams
Antalya's architecture includes several structures of huge historical significance. One of these can be found about 30 km away at Myra, but is worth making the journey to discover. Here there is a 2nd century Roman amphitheatre, still largely intact, which was probably used as an arena for fights between beasts and men under the reign of Marcus Aurelius. These days it is more likely to be used as a music stadium, and a visit to Antalya - and to Myra - in June can allow you the opportunity to see an opera performance while seated on the steps of the amphitheatre itself.
The gateway to ancient Antalya
Kaleici is the old quarter of Antalya, and if you want to visit this, the smart place to head for is the district of Kilincarslan, away from some of the busier and more tourist-dominated areas. Many locals would say that the best way into Kaleici is via Hadrian's Gate, and this will deposit you directly into Kilincarslan, so that you may start exploring the winding streets that line the ancient sections of the city wall that still stand to this day.
Take in all of the sights of ancient Antalya, from the preserved sections of the walls, to the ruins of gates that once provided controlled access into the area. Minarets await you in amongst the other buildings, with some of these towers still in good condition, and others standing in ruins.
When should I visit Antalya?
The summer months are arguably the best time for a trip to Antalya, with the weather warmer in July and August. As mentioned above, a trip in June is an ideal opportunity to make the journey to Myra, if you are able to gain access to a music or operatic festival. But really the region as a whole can be explored at any time of year, with the changing weather conditions bringing a new look to the local landscape with the passing of each season.
