- Montenegro Luxury holidays
Montenegro in its current form is one of the youngest countries on Earth, having gained its independence officially on June 3rd 2006. Prior to this it was part of Serbia and Montenegro, which in turn was preceded in name by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until 2003, and was a part of Yugoslavia itself until 1991. But the history of the area stretches back many centuries to the Illyrian tribes. The natural landscape in many ways harks back over generations of geographical development too, creating a compelling destination for sightseers, most of whom will never have visited this part of the world before.
Montenegro's name natively means Black Mountain, originally known as a small strip of upland in the country, but gradually broadening to refer to the entire area. The landscape remains a significant part of the country's attraction for tourists, including Europe's deepest canyon, the Tara River Gorge, which measures 4,300 feet at its deepest point. Biogradska Gora, the most north-easterly of Montenegro's national parks, is also found in the mountains, and is one of only three remaining rainforest climates in Europe.
A return to favour
While the younger holidaymakers may be unfamiliar with Montenegro as a tourist destination, it was popular up until the 1980s, and the democratic peace in the region during the 21st century is helping it to return to favour. With its mountainous north and picturesque coastline, it's easy to see why this is the case, and a great opportunity to schedule a visit before the crowds return in earnest.
When should I visit Montenegro?
You might think June 3rd would be a day of celebration in Montenegro, as this was when the country officially became independent. However, the event that is more widely recognised is the date of the referendum in which the people voted for this to happen, and that was on May 21st 2006. A further complication is the annual Statehood Day, and this tradition reaches back to July 13th 1878, when the Berlin Congress recognised Montenegro as an independent state. On either of these dates - and to an extent on June 3rd as well - you can expect national pride to be a little higher and may find yourself among festivities and more formal commemorations of the landmark date.
