Located less than 2 hours south of Paris, Bourges is best known as the location of one of France’s most beautiful cathedrals. Spend a day exploring the streets around the centre and discover charming cafés, unique shopping and other architectural delights. Head to the breathtaking Cathédrale St-Etienne. This dates back to the 12th century and is considered by many as one of Europe’s finest cathedrals. Walk around the exterior and study the towering spires and giant buttresses inspired by the Notre Dame in Paris. Inside, view the stunning selection of stained-glass windows, created between 1215 and 1225. Stories such as the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan are told in bright colour, with sublime attention to detail. Climb to the top of the Tour de Beurre for views over the old town. Enjoy more fantastic architecture at the nearby Palais de Jacques Coeur. The former home of the richest man in France is a showy 15th-century mansion featuring imposing turrets and a beautiful arched main entrance.
