InterContinental Porto – Palácio das Cardosas: A Hotel That Makes Leaving Rather Difficult Every now and then, you stay somewhere that reminds you why great hotels are worth seeking out. The InterContinental Porto is one of those places. First, there’s the building. A magnificent historic palace sitting proudly in the heart of Porto, looking as though it has spent centuries quietly judging the architectural decisions of lesser buildings. The location is nearly impossible to improve upon. Step outside and you’re surrounded by beautiful architecture, wonderful restaurants, charming streets, and enough hills to make you question whether Porto has ever heard of level ground. Inside, the hotel is elegant without being pretentious, luxurious without trying too hard, and wonderfully comfortable. But the beds. Oh, those magnificent beds. After traveling through Europe and encountering a few mattresses that seemed better suited for medieval punishment than a good night’s sleep, the beds at the InterContinental were nothing short of heavenly. The pillows were extraordinary, the sheets were wonderfully soft and luxurious, and the entire experience was like being gently embraced by a cloud that had somehow earned a degree in hospitality. I’m convinced the hotel has discovered some secret formula for perfect sleep. The pillows, the sheets, the mattress, everything was exceptional. We slept so well that getting out of bed each morning felt less like starting a new day and more like

This is such a gem. It feels cosy and intimate as well as very modern. There are lovely touches such as the 20th century furnishings which fit in so well with the modern refurbishment. The staff could not have been more helpful and really made our stay feel like we were at our own place. Our room was spotless and comfortable with a small enclosed suntrap to catch the afternoon warmth. The bathroom was small, but all we needed. Breakfast was simple but extensive, with more than enough to fuel all our walking. We loved the neighbourhood, being just far enough from the centre to be quiet, but close enough to walk to all the sights. Our experience really enhanced our stay in beautiful Porto
