The capital of the River Ebro hides pleasures for all tastes: beyond the emblematic Virgin of the Pillar, the city offers many cultural, architectural and culinary treasures.

Zaragoza flaunts an extensive historical heritage, the traces of several cultures who have settled here over the centuries. The city's origin lies with the Romans: take advantage of Zaragoza holiday package deals and follow the steps of the founders of Caesaraugusta by visiting its theatre, the forum, the river port and the public baths. Centuries later, the Arabs, Jews and Christians passed through the city, contributing to the city's architecture.

The historic centre brings together the main historical monuments, which most importantly include the majestic Basilica del Pilar with its forest of domes and towers and the famous frescoes by Goya inside. Without leaving the city centre, admire major works of Mudéjar art, such as the Seo (episcopal see), with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, the Palacio de la Aljaferia and the church of San Pablo.

Aside from its spectacular Roman, Muslim, Jew and Christian heritage, new interesting works of contemporary architecture have also been added, such as the Bridge Pavilion by Zaha Hadid, and the Spanish Pavilion by Francisco Mangado, two major contributions to the city's urban landscape from the 2008 Expo. Many seek cheap Zaragoza holidays to continue exploring what the Expo left behind. After so much touring, stop by the famous Tubo area, where you'll find a large number of tapas bars where you can relax and enjoy the great Aragonese cuisine.

The convenient location of the city, just over three hundred kilometres from Madrid and Barcelona, makes it easy to find Zaragoza holiday package deals. Although not many airlines operate out of its airport, you may be in luck and find a flight + hotel to Zaragoza package at a good price.

Whether by car, train, plane or bus, what matters is getting there and enjoying all this city has to offer. If you're after excitement, why not try canoeing down the River Ebro?
