Charleston Waterfront Park reflects the character and history of the city’s architecture and gardens. At the southernmost point of the eight-acre (three-hectare) park, a wooden pier juts out over the Charleston Harbour. Sit on one of the old-fashion benches and take in views of the esplanade, which curls along the waterline, through salt marshes and palmetto trees to a central grassy lawn. Bring a picnic and relax while watching boats in the harbour. There are swings for children and paths for strolling or jogging. Before 1990 the waterfront was an unattractive, fire-damaged area, which was historically used for shipping. It was restored with the help of local architects and artists into a beautiful and vibrant gathering place. In the centre of the park is Charleston’s iconic Pineapple Fountain, a charming subject for photos. The pineapple is a symbol of hospitality dating back to early colonial days. The City Gallery sits beside the fountain and showcases local, national and international artists, with rotating exhibits throughout the year. Take a detour down Exchange Street to visit the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. Tour the exchange for a history of the American Revolution and Civil War, and stories of prisoners kept here during the revolution. At the north end of Concord Street, oak trees and landscaped gardens create inviting shade. If you’re hungry, stop in at one of the restaurants that serve Southern delicacies such as pimento cheese rib eye and fried green tomatoes with blue crab. There are many choices for eating a meal with views of the harbour. The South Carolina Aquarium at the north end of the park has creatures from local and international habitats. Water taxi tours cruise around the harbour and across to Patriot’s Point Maritime Museum. The Charleston Waterfront Park, in downtown, is accessible at any time of the day or night. Attraction opening hours vary. Navigate the park by foot, or on a bicycle rented from stores around Charleston. It would have been nice to switch to a new room, but we were too busy exploring the beauties of Charleston to care much about the room. I would definitely recommend the Ryder Hotel if you are planning to just have a cozy place to sleep. The silhouette of its wrought iron balcony against the spire of St. Philip's church may be the single most photographed spot in the city. The main portion of the building was constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel. The hotel was built by Alexander Calder and his wife, who did so by renovating several pre-existing buildings at the site. The main entrance may not have been built until 1855 by J.W. Gamble. The hotel was used extensively by planters from the midlands of South Carolina, who traveled to Charleston during horse-racing season. It was noted for its wonderful food and drinks during this era, and the South's famous Planter's Punch may have originated here. Guests to the hotel passed through the recessed porch with brownstone columns, into the lobby, and up a grand staircase that ascended to a drawing room. While much of the interior has been altered, these elements of the antebellum hotel remain and were adapted in subsequent uses of the building. A series of additions to the hotel throughout the 19th and 20th centuries can be easily identified by differences in brick coloration. This theater is said to have been the first building built specifically for theatrical performances in America. Planter's Hotel occasionally housed one of the city's theatrical troupes, which performed at the nearby New Theatre during the mid-19th century. The most notable actor of this troupe was Junius Brutus Booth. Booth was the patriarch of an outstanding family of actors, which included John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin. Junius Booth, who stayed at the Planter's Hotel, allegedly tried to kill his manager here in 1838.
