The whole family, from tiny tots to thrill seekers, will enjoy this amusement park with water rides, paddle pools and plenty of thrills.

A trip to Water World makes the perfect day out for energetic families and weary travelers alike. Get wet in one of the family tube rides Water World has more than any other water park in America. Wear the kids out in three separate designated children’s play areas, then spread out a picnic rug in the ample garden space. There are more than 49 attractions across 64 acres (26 hectares) in Federal Heights, just north of downtown.

Enter from the southern end of the park and take time to get your bearings. Maps are available from the information booth, where you’ll also find changing rooms, lockers and a gift shop.

Bigger kids and adventurous adults will want to head straight for the park’s newest attraction, the Mile High Flyer. This “hydromagnetic” water coaster sends groups of four on a thrilling two-minute ride that’s closer to a roller coaster than a water slide. Special technology defies gravity, making water go uphill. There are more than 10 other slides in the “thrill” category, including Pirate’s Plunge, Screamin’ Mimi and Jet Stream.

For gentler rides more suited to younger children, Water World has options such as Monkey Business, Clown Around Creek, Wally World and Tiger Tail. And the whole family will enjoy time together on the Voyage to the Center of the Earth. Hop aboard your raft and enter a cavern that recreates a prehistoric world, complete with animatronic dinosaurs.

When its time to chill out, head to The Wave or grab a tube and float down the Lazy River, a laid-back ride through the park.

The park has fast-food stands and informal cafes where burgers, pizzas and hot dogs are on the menu. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food, with plenty of picnic facilities available from covered pavilions to grass lawns.

Water World is a 25-minute drive from downtown Denver, and plenty of free parking is available. This summer attraction is open from the end of May through Labor Day. Be advised that proper swimsuit attire is required, and there are changing lockers available for a small fee.
