With some of the city’s most historically and architecturally interesting sites, Germany’s oldest university forms the beating heart of the Heidelberg Altstadt.
Since 1386, the University of Heidelberg Old Campus has been welcoming students to the banks of the Necker. Today, the campus is home to the humanities departments of the modern university. Many of the university’s most idiosyncratic and best-known buildings are open to visitors anxious to get a taste of student life throughout the ages. Go on a walking tour along the streets of the Altstadt in search of these spots.
Start on Universitätplatz, known as the center of the “New University.” Explore the Old University building, built in the 18th century, which holds not only the small and interesting university museum but also the Great Hall, a magnificent former lecture hall with elaborate neo-Baroque decoration.
Peek into the rector’s office with its busts of former prominent university characters. Go to the Studentenkarzer, the former student jail, decorated with graffiti spanning several centuries.
Head off Universitätplatz to the nearby University Library, one of the city’s most visually arresting buildings. Peruse the stacks, widely considered to be one of Germany’s best libraries, or just stand outside to appreciate the impressive details that adorn the statues covering almost every inch of the façade.
Wander from here, looking for the university’s sigil that marks the buildings as part of the wider academic community. Attend one of the public lectures or eat lunch with students in the small restaurants all along the streets.
Though Universitätplatz is the central focus, university buildings are scattered all over the Heidelberg Altstadt. Reach the Universitätplatz in 15 minutes by bus from the Heidelberg Central Station. Walk from the train station in about 30 minutes or in 6 minutes from the cruise port terminal. Other buildings, including the University Library, are a few minutes away on foot.
