Philipsburg – The capital of Sint Maarten and the country’s largest city, Philipsburg is made up of a collection of colourful single storey Caribbean streets and modern developments. Boasting a beautiful town beach, some great restaurants and some of the best shopping in Sint Maarten, Philipsburg has more than enough to keep you busy during your stay.
Maho Bay – Located at the end of Sint Maarten’s airport runway, Maho Bay offers breathtaking views of planes coming in to land. Grab your camera for some fantastic action shots or simply lie back on the sand and enjoy your unique courtside view.
Mullet Bay – This spectacular moon shaped bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. White sand, bright blue water and gently rolling waves make it the ideal destination for a day out on the beach. If you want to get active during your stay in Sint Maarten, Mullet Bay is also a good spot for surfing so hire a board and hit the water.
Guana Bay – One of the least developed beaches in Sint Maarten, Guana Bay is on the Atlantic side of the island and so has more dramatic waves and cooler waters. The main attraction of the bay – apart from its stunning setting – is the walking trail that leads you along the coast to a beautiful tidal pool.
Things to See in Sint Maarten
If you’re interested in the region’s past, a visit to the historic Fort Amsterdam is a must. Built by the Dutch in 1631, the fort was quickly captured by the Spanish who held it until 1648 when the island was partitioned between the Netherlands and France. Well worth a look during your time in the region, the fort is a reminder of Sint Maarten’s fascinating past. To see a more modern side of life on the island, explore the colourful streets of Philipsburg or head to Maho Bay and watch as enormous passenger planes come in to land at the country’s airport.
Things to Do in Sint Maarten
Most activities in Sint Maarten revolve around the beach. Have a go at jet skiing, sailing, diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking, organise a deep sea fishing trip from one of the water sports centres on the island or hire a boat and enjoy a private excursion out into the clear Caribbean waters. Other activities on Sint Maarten include hiking, golf, cycling and horse riding, or if you really want to get your adrenaline pumping, why not have a go at parasailing or paragliding and see the country from a whole new point of view.
