We had a great 3 week stay in Antigua. Sonja has 5 cute little cottages in lush gardens of tropical flowers, shrubs and fruit trees, which she has all planted and designed herself. The cottages are all slightly different, but all well designed, spotlessly clean, with full kitchens and outside sitting areas.
One has a large raised deck area surrounded and secluded by bamboo and palms, one has a sitting area up some steps with lovely countryside views, one has a large grassed area in front with seats and sunbeds....all are charming and so is Sonja. Always available on site if you need any help with trips, taxis, jeep hire etc but doesn't intrude if you want a quiet time.
She offers a weekly cleaning and linen change free of charge, and also supplies huge bottles of water at cost price, very useful.
Antigua is beautiful and quite undeveloped compared to Barbados, the capital St Johns is interesting to stroll around, thronged with locals and cruise ship passengers, lots of vendors selling fresh fruit and veg from the back of their vans.
Some gorgeous beaches, Deep Bay (15 mins walk away from Pinkshacks), Half Moon Bay and Long Bay were our favourites, great for swimming and snorkelling.
Hiring a car or jeep is advisable but there are frequent buses into St Johns and from there you can get buses to other areas of the island.
There's not really anywhere to eat out within walking distance of Pinkshacks but we enjoyed shopping in the markets and doing our own cooking, or getting ready made food in the local supermarkets and reheating. There is a local barbeque in Five Islands Village twice a week.
Another thing we really enjoyed were the birds of Antigua, there are salt ponds and mangrove swamps full of birdlife, pelicans diving for fish, frigate birds, egrets, herons, ospreys, whistling ducks etc
Thanks Sonja for a great holiday
