Denia is a dream holiday spot for anyone looking for Spanish sunshine with the feel of a traditional town. With an unspoilt centre, smart marina and lovely line-up of sandy beaches stretching along the Mediterranean coast, this port city between Valencia and Alicante ticks all the boxes for a relaxed holiday off the busier tourist trail.
Port and marina hotels in Denia are a popular choice. Hotels like La Posada del Mar sit right on the waterfront, overlooking the fishing boats and yachts. This hotel also offers views of Denia's top landmark, its hilltop castle, which sits a few streets back from the busy waterfront promenade, looking down on the action.
Behind the castle sits the traditional heart of Denia – a labyrinth of tiny lanes lined with colourful, crumbling houses. Here, locals and tourists mingle in family-run restaurants and bars that spill out onto the narrow streets. It's a good place to find affordable boutique hotels in Denia – the quirky and colourful Art Boutique Hotel Chamarel is one example, sitting just steps from the Ethnological Museum (a 19th-century townhouse showing how locals used to live).
If you'd prefer a larger, more modern style of hotel, you'll find some on the outskirts of the centre, opposite the western end of the marina. You'll also find a wide choice of hotels with a pool in Denia, lined up along the coastal main road that runs from the opposite end of the marina (the Carretera de les Marines a Denia).
There are several affordable, traditional-style hotels near Denia Castle and Archaeological Museum. These will also place you in the centre of the atmospheric old town, close to the rose-coloured baroque Assumption Church and the arcaded City Hall, which both sit in the castle's shadow on Constitution Square.
If you like to be able to see the water when you're on holiday, hotels near Denia marina give beautiful views over the bobbing boats and out to sea. These hotels tend to be slightly more expensive than those in the old town or on the outskirts, as you're paying for a prime position between the marina and the castle.
Denia also makes a good holiday base for active types who wish to tackle a hike up Montgo – the mountain that gives the city its scenic backdrop, within the beautiful surroundings of the Montgo Natural Park. There are several marked routes that you can follow within the park, and guided hikes are available from the visitor centre.
If you prefer to spend your holidays relaxing on a sandy beach, you can stay slightly out of the centre at a hotel near Les Marines beach, or Les Bovetes beach a little further up the coast.
Denia is an ideal beach holiday destination for couples who want to avoid the very busy tourist resorts on the Costa Blanca. The charming old town and quiet beaches make it a romantic place to experience unspoilt Spain.
If an old-town stay appeals, then you'll find plenty of unique, boutique-style little guesthouses to choose from. Take a look at Hotel Nou Romà for quirky, spacious rooms and a leafy courtyard for alfresco dining. Choose a room in the annex building for extra privacy!
If you want to treat yourself to a really luxurious stay, and don't mind being a short distance away from Denia centre, Hotel Los Angeles offers four-star luxury on its own private beach. It's three miles (5km) from the castle, but bikes are available to hire if you fancy a romantic ride along the coastal road.
Beach hotels in Denia are always going to be popular for sun-sea-and-sand holidays, and there's a good selection of options to suit all budgets. Consider the Apartamentos Carlton Playa, which is one of the many affordable hotels in Denia with a pool.
While this low-key destination isn't big on over-the-top attractions for kids, there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Denia for those who want a relaxed family holiday. In the old town, Casa San Pascual has five-person apartments just a short walk from the castle and Denia's sweet Toy Museum. And if you'd prefer a quieter position right by the sea, Apartamento Paraiso del Sol is one of many affordable apartment-hotels in Denia with a pool and private parking.
However, if your kids like to have ample amusements and plenty of things to do during their beach holidays, you might prefer to look at Benidorm hotels, just 40 minutes along the coast, or head further south and look at hotels in Almunecar.
