Skåne County

Sweden
Skane

From medieval castles to World War II museums, this Swedish county has captivating historic sights as well as a beach-fringed coastline.

Located in the south of Sweden, Skane county is a thrilling place to visit. Discover the ruins of ancient castles, learn about the history of Sweden in interactive museums or head to the sandy dunes along the coast.

Skane is littered with castles, including the distinctive Bjersjoholms Castle, identifiable by its bright yellow façade and orange rooftop. At the very southwestern tip of Sweden are the ruins of Falsterbohus Castle, which would have once been the home to the king’s sheriff. Explore the grounds of Hovdala Castle; its manicured gardens and fruit trees produce lovely aromas year-round.

If it’s museums you’re after, Skane can deliver, with lots of educational experiences for all ages. Take a trip to Burlov to visit Burlov’s Old Vicarage and Open Air Museum, set in a mid-18th century residence. In Angelholm, the Angelholms Aviation Museum displays aircraft and pilot equipment from World War II. Music fans should head to Trelleborg to see the Beatles Exhibition, a private collection of paraphernalia including posters, instruments and films.

For a distinct blend of old and new, visit Malmo where modern architecture stands alongside Renaissance castles. Look for the 16th-century Malmohus Castle and marvel at the towering Turning Torso building, which twists 90 degrees from the base to the top.

Skane’s coastline features sandy dunes and stunning beaches with calm waters and pier-side restaurants. Borrby Beach, for instance, has clear and shallow water, perfect for the whole family. For incredible sunsets, head to Baskemolla Beach right next to the port.

With three airports and ferry ports in Skane, getting here is easy. Fly into Malmo Airport for the south of Skane or Angelholm-Helsingborg Airport for the north of the region. Take a ferry from Denmark to Helsingborg, Trelleborg or Ystad. The city of Malmo serves as the gateway to the Skane region from Denmark, as it’s connected to Copenhagen by the Oresund Bridge.

While the summer is high season in Skane, the winter is also a great time to visit to attend hockey games and find lower accommodation prices.
