"This is the kind of hotel that makes you wonder if the designer has ever actually stayed at a hotel. Everything was clean and shiny, but the bedside table was miles from the bed and the charger ports hanging in mid air. Fine if you have super long arms and cables. Not so good if you want to charge a power bank with a tiny cable. Only one tea bag, which wasn’t ideal. But the place is clean, nice and walking distance to Stansted, great for an early morning flight. Just bring long cables."

"Clean room, freindly reception staff, hardworking friendly bar and restaurant staff. We ate dinner outside from the bar menu, the food was AMAZING, hats off to the chef. Nice cold drinks for a very hot bank holiday, dig deep though if you fancy a cocktail- around £15 per drink which we feel is a little pricey. Room was fresh and filled with air con which made the night very relaxing. Quiet setting, nice atmosphere in evening. Made use of the spa whilst here- really nice, rooftop terrace with jacuzzi is a nice touch! Will deffo return, thank you for a really lovely stay. 10/10"

"Not the best hotel, but you get what you pay for. It is super close to the airport which is a bonus and some decent eateries in the welcome break part. They don’t tell you this, but if you’ve not booked on their direct website - be prepared to pay £5 for your parking! The room was a decent size, shower was decent. Cleanliness was ok as well. Alright if you’ve got an early flight or a lay over!"

Holiday Inn Express Colchester by IHG

"I chose this Holiday Inn Express for three very specific reasons, especially since we were travelling to Colchester on a very hot 32°C day and unfortunately, the hotel failed us on all three. 1) Air Conditioning One of the main reasons we booked this hotel was because it advertised air‑conditioned rooms. When we arrived, the room was set to 23.5°C and we were unable to adjust it. We went to reception and were told the entire hotel was locked to that temperature. Their solution was to hand us a small, ineffective fan. I’m travelling with a toddler and I’m heavily pregnant a cool room wasn’t a luxury, it was a necessity. Instead, the room was uncomfortably hot and made the stay miserable. 2) EV Charging Point We also chose this hotel because it listed an on‑site EV charger. After driving nearly 200 miles, we urgently needed to charge the car. When we arrived, the charger was out of order. No warning, no alternative, nothing. Another major disappointment. 3) Restaurant & Kids Eat Free Holiday Inn hotels are known for having decent restaurants and the “kids eat free” offer. When we arrived at 5pm with a hungry toddler, we discovered: The restaurant doesn’t serve food until 6–9pm. The “kids eat free” offer does not apply to Holiday Inn Express locations — something only found in the fine print. Again, another expectation completely unmet. Positives: The room was clean and breakfast was good. But when you’re overheated and uncomfortable, it overshadows everything"
