Pocket Guide: Rarotonga

Although it measures just 32 km around, Rarotonga is the largest and most populous of the 15 Cook Islands, which are sprinkled in the South Pacific about a third of the way between Australia and South America. Home to roughly 10,000 residents strewn across 70 sq. km, this volcanic creation lies in the middle of a lagoon, with rich reefs along the north shore and wide-open, water sport-friendly seas to the south. You can experience all of the wonder this island has to offer by booking a cheap room in any of the Rarotonga resorts.

Where to Stay in Rarotonga

The rich variety of Rarotonga hotels, motels, and resorts makes it easy for travellers with any set of tastes to find the perfect accommodation. All of the lodging options on the island are located on Ara Tapu, the main road that dates back to the 11th century. And since that road runs so close to the water, there are plenty of beach hotels in Rarotonga to choose from.

Getting there

Most visitors travelling to Rarotonga arrive via the island’s international airport, although there are also three seaports that regularly welcome cruise ships to this region. If you’re among those flying to Rarotonga, you can make your way around town by hiring a car or moped right from the airport. Visitors from Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Western Europe must present a current driver’s license to arrange a vehicle, but the local government requires those from other countries to acquire a Cook Islands license prior to driving. If you’d rather get around the island using public transportation, there are two bus routes, aptly named Clockwise and Anti-Clockwise. Although there are designated stops on these routes, riders can ask to be let off wherever they’d like.
