Waterways, forests and vast prairies make up the picturesque pastoral backdrop of this quiet town known for its Southern traditions.

Prairieville is a quaint and diverse suburban town just outside Baton Rouge. It has a rustic charm and was long known as a traditional farmstead that is now a park. Get a sense of the local culture through the markets and parks of this large and rural area.

At the cultural and geographical heart of Prairieville lies the Flea Market of Louisiana, which is open on weekends and prides itself on its fun family atmosphere. Peruse the pottery, stuffed toys and souvenirs for sale in the stalls and try the local cuisine.

A little west is Oak Lane Memorial Park. Hear how this plot of land belonged to the iconic Phillips Farm and was a fine example of Prairieville’s traditional Southern feel until the owner died and the cemetery was founded. Drive through the rural terrain and appreciate the wide, green expanses that gave the town its name.

Try some of the local delicacies in various restaurants. The annual Crawfête has become a local staple, as chefs compete to create gourmet crawfish dishes.

Stroll along the shores of the large and scenic Muddy Creek and set up a picnic in the shade of the trees. Bring your kids to frolic in the playground of the neighboring Prairieville Park. Head north for Airline Highway Park, which has an air gun range, playgrounds and picnic shelters. It stands beside the many lakes, hills and bunkers of the Santa Maria Golf Course.

The whole family will love nearby Blue Bayou Water Park. Accompany your kids in the Pirate’s Cove and brave yourself for Lafitte’s Plunge. Ride on the roller coasters, spinners and hoppers of the Dixie Landin’ amusement park. Let little ones enjoy the miniature trains and boat race.

Drive southeast from the heart of Baton Rouge for about 18 miles (29 kilometres) to get here in around 30 minutes. It is just past the areas of South Baton Rouge, Old Jefferson and Shenandoah.

The shower had very low water pressure and the toilet didn’t flush very well. My husband is a retired plumber ..."
