1. Hotel Cueva del Fraile

Cuenca

"The property was tranquil and located within easy driving distance of the historic Cuenca district. The room was rather stark with a television that glitched quite a bit but we were not into the room that much. Despite the uninspiring interior decor of the room, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean. If you’re not looking for anything fancy or somewhat luxurious, this would be a good place to stay."

"Victoria is kind and helpful and the property is a beautiful rambling half hostel but with beautifully appointed rooms and upholstered walls and a treasure of things to look at in common areas. Beautiful old buildings and grounds. Our shower ran cold to cool and was confusing to control, but it was hot and we didn’t ask about it so can’t complain too much there. Pool was also lovely and clean."

Apartamentos Rascacielos San Martin

10/10 Excellent

"What an excellent find. The apartment is huge and extremely well equipped. Really exceeded our expectations. I would definitely book it again when in Cuenca. It's also conviniently located at the entrance to the old town. The communication with the owner/ property manager was excellent from start to finish. Highly recommended"

Mirador Del Rey

10/10 Excellent

"This place is absolutely amazing! From the moment we arrived, we were completely in love with it. It is beautiful, charming, spacious, spotless, and full of character. The architecture and decoration are stunning—you can truly feel the care and thought that went into every detail. It is even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. The location could not be better. It is literally a 2-minute walk from the cathedral and within walking distance of everything. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to stay. And then there is Ana… ❤️ She deserves a review of her own. She is one of those rare people who makes you feel genuinely cared for and welcomed. She is incredibly kind, thoughtful, attentive, and warm, and she went above and beyond to make our stay special. Of course, hosting is a business, and at the end of the day, that is how most people see it. But with Ana, you can truly feel that it goes beyond business. She genuinely cares about her guests, about making them comfortable, happy, and at home. She made us feel welcomed, embraced, and truly looked after. Her kindness made an already wonderful stay even more memorable. Everything in the house reflects the same level of care and quality. The beds and pillows are incredibly comfortable, and the towels and other amenities are excellent quality. Every detail feels intentional. We absolutely loved our stay and would come back in a heartbeat. If you are considering staying here, book it—you will not regret it!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Portilla?

The best area to stay in Portilla is the historic centre, particularly around the Plaza Mayor.

This area is the heart of Portilla, characterised by its well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and a relaxed pace of life. The Plaza Mayor itself is a beautiful, arcaded square, superb for enjoying a coffee or an evening meal. You'll find many of Portilla's key attractions within a short walk, including the Church of San Miguel and the town's ancient defensive walls.

Couples looking for a romantic and serene getaway will find the historic centre ideal. The intimate setting, with its charming guesthouses and local restaurants offering regional cuisine, provides a wonderful backdrop for a relaxing holiday.

When is the best time to go to Portilla?

The best time to visit Portilla is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

During these periods, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the surrounding Castilla region. You'll find comfortable temperatures for hiking, cycling, and enjoying outdoor activities without the intense heat of summer or the chill of winter.

For those interested in experiencing local traditions and harvest festivals, early autumn is particularly rewarding. This is when the grape harvests often take place in the nearby vineyards, offering a chance to see the region's agricultural heritage firsthand. The landscapes are also very picturesque with the changing colours of the foliage.

Travellers looking for a quiet escape will appreciate these shoulder seasons as they generally see fewer crowds than the peak summer months.
