Skyville Zen Resort, Kundasang

10/10 Excellent

"Staying up in the mountains, you have to accept that you will have insect visitors come in your room. The host gave us a spray to help the insects leave. The host kept our room clean and gave fresh towels. They helped us build our itinerary. I had to have some milk and food for my young kids and they let me use their fridge. Dog was friendly."

Sutera Sanctuary Lodges at Kinabalu Park

10/10 Excellent

"Friendly staff and the suite was great. You're located directly inside the Kinabalu National Park in Kundasang. We were specifically in one of the Nepenthes Suites which I can say was very nice (one of the King Bed suites). It was roomie, included full bathroom with a shower and hot water, a mini fridge, a sink with a facet for drinkable water, a smart tv (not huge), and a fire place. Entry into the park was 50 ringgit for foreigners, and 10 ringgit for locals. This is a per person/ per entry fee unless you're staying inside the park like we were, in which case the fee lasts 3 days. *If you're staying in the park you can leave the park and come back during these 3 days and you should be able to just show the person at the gate your initial ticket - we did have some confusion where the person at the gate thought we had to pay again, but the people at the front desk were able to confirm the tickets are good for 3 days and they got our second payment returned to us. Our stay also included a breakfast service each morning from the restaurant in the park which was nice (a very short walk from our suite), and they also offered room service from the same restaurant. Room service obviously wasn't included, but there wasn't a service fee or anything apart from the cost of the meals which was also nice coming from the US. Over all my wife and I really enjoyed the stay and I felt it was great value."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Poring?

The best area to stay in Poring is within the Poring Hot Spring complex itself, which offers the most convenient access to the main attractions.

This area is located within the rainforest and is centred around the hot spring baths and the famous Canopy Walkway. There are a few accommodation options directly managed by the Sabah Parks, ranging from basic chalets to more comfortable lodges. Staying here means you're just a short walk from the entrance to the Canopy Walkway, various nature trails, and the pools.

For couples looking for a romantic escape, staying within the complex provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and the hot springs in a tranquil setting, especially in the evenings after the day visitors have left. You'll find it incredibly relaxing and convenient for early morning walks or late-night soaks.

For families, the convenience of being on-site is a huge plus. It means less travel time and more time enjoying the facilities, such as the children's pool, butterfly farm, and the various waterfalls accessible via short walks.

When is the best time to go to Poring?

The best time to go to Poring, Sabah, Malaysia, is during the dry season, which runs from March to October.

During these months, you'll experience less rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities like exploring the Poring Hot Spring area and its canopy walkway. The weather is generally warm and humid year-round, but the dry season offers more consistent conditions for enjoying the natural attractions without interruption from heavy downpours.

Couples looking for a relaxing and adventurous getaway will find this period particularly appealing. The clearer weather allows for comfortable hikes through the rainforest, soaking in the hot springs, and visiting nearby attractions like the Kipungit Waterfall. It's also a great time for wildlife spotting, as animals are more active and visible.

Families travelling with children will also appreciate the dry season. The stable weather makes it easier to plan daily excursions, such as visiting the butterfly farm or the orchid garden, without worrying about sudden changes in weather affecting outdoor plans.
