Shops and restaurants line the streets of this quaint inland village, where a market creates a bohemian vibe twice a week.
With a charming cluster of whitewashed residences and a market, Pilar de la Mola is an ideal base for exploring the natural treasures of Formentera Island. The village has a cluster of bistros and stores that provide a window into the local culture. Amble along the sides of the narrow tree-lined road passing through the center of the community.
The highlight in the village is La Mola Market, a bazaar held on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons in summer. Move among the stalls displaying a range of artisanal products. Chat with the local vendors and bargain for the best prices for jewelry, ceramics and handbags. Admire the paintings and handicrafts that exhibit the creative skills of the islanders.
In the center of the town is the Plaça del Pilar, a square on whose northern border stands Our Lady of Pilar Church. Admire the religious building’s elegant white design and large looping portals.
Relax with a drink at one of the bars and restaurants lining the main road of the village. You can also stay at one of the rental apartments and hotels and use the settlement as an ideal base to explore surrounding coastal resorts.
Standing in the southeastern outskirts of the village is the 18th-century Molì Vell (Old Windmill), used to help process wheat. Continue southeast until you reach the coast, where you’ll find the Mola Lighthouse. Spot lizards in the vicinity of the great white tower and enjoy views of the sea from the cliffs.
Pilar de la Mola is located in the toes of the high-heeled shoe that is Formentera Island. It is the highest point on the island, a 20-minute drive southeast from the town of Sant Francesc Xavier. See some of the other nearby highlights, such as the Caló des Mort, the village of Es Caló and the Castellum Can Blai.
