It was my first time in a hostel so I was pleasantly surprised by clean surroundings nice pool and outdoor space, great food and drinks prices, good air con, hot water which is a bonus too. Friendly, helpful staff. Good food. Excellent location. The common areas are thoughtfully designed in a way that guests can enjoy the company of others or sit quietly at smaller tables. I appreciated the film selection on movie night—First They Killed My Father. It made for good conversation. I would ...

It's a friendly place, nice pool, and patio area. Made some good friends here, I recommend it and will stay here in the future. I would add curtains to the bunk beds like in most other hostels for further privacy.

This place is a 5/10, but meant in the sense of perfectly average for its cost relative to others in Phnom Penh. It feels like it is slowly falling apart and nothing much is being done about that. The bustling Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh is renowned for its conviviality, and where better to base yourself than in one of the welcoming, convivial hostels of the city?

There is a fine choice of hostels available wherever you want to stay in the city – relaxing in a riverside hostel or close to the frenetic activity that surrounds the central markets and restaurants and other attractions.

The hostels range from comfortable backpacker hostel to more upmarket options offering private and family rooms, outside space to relax in, communal areas and Wi-Fi access throughout.

      About the city

Phnom Penh is a city with an unbreakable spirit. Its energy and zest for life are clearly apparent and have helped it recover from the devastation wrought by Pol Pot.

Today this hip capital offers fantastic nightlife and a foodie scene that is hard to beat. Its history stretches back way before the Khmer Rouge and from most places near its centre you can see the shining spires of the Royal Palace or the saffron robes of the Buddhist monks.

Situated on the banks of the Mekong river there are many relaxing hostels that line its banks. The lazy, serene meandering of the river offers a strong contrast to the speeding motorbikes, noisy markets and the ominous walls of S21, a former internment camp for the Khmer Rouge that sits in the heart of the city.

      Sightseeing from your hostel

Although a large city, the main sights and attractions of Phnom Penh are thankfully close to each other.

From your hostel you can explore Sisowath Quay, the heart of the city that is dominated by the glistening of the golden Royal Palace behind it. The Quay is a great place to watch locals chat, fly kites, picnic and idly watch the river floating past.

Nearby you will find the National Museum, Liberation Monument and the chilling former school building of S21 which commemorates the suffering of Cambodians.

There are many temples to explore, including Wat Ounalom, where the heart of contemporary Cambodian Buddhism can be found, and, perched on a hill, Wat Phnom, where painted murals, stone lions and the cloying smell of incense make for an atmospheric visit.

Your hostel will be able to arrange you a trip out to Choeung Ek, which is better known as the Killing Fields. A simple monument bears witness to the fact that underneth the ground the bodies of nearly 9,000 victims of the Khmer Rouge were found. The deathly silence here - just a few miles from the city - makes the noise of the capital suddenly welcome.

The staff at your hostel will also advise you of the best places to eat, shop, drink and be merry in the city. Phnom Penh continues to see new places open and the food scene here is incredibly rich.
