"The hotel is right at the station, which made it incredibly convenient. It’s an unmanned hotel with check-in handled through a machine, but the staff I interacted with were very polite. My room was very clean, the beds were comfortable, and fresh towels were available daily on request. There’s also a lounge area with vending machines, free tea and ice, plus extra toiletries if you need them."

"This is an older hotel/onsen that has been bought by a Japanese chain, and they have done a great job refurbishing parts of it while keeping the general feel of an older onsen. My friend and I greatly enjoyed our stay. We found the staff very kind and helpful, the food good, and the atmosphere in general very pleasant. Everything felt reasonably priced, and we had no problems using the onsen even with tattoos. We greatly enjoyed our stay and recommend it to anyone else looking for some peace in...

They went out of their way to ensure our comfort and shared wonderful details about their beautiful, nutritious, farm-to-table meals. We even got to tour their farm, learn about rice planting, and spot a precious firefly. The house is bright and clean, overlooking rice paddies, with a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities. It's also centrally located in Akita, making it easy to visit spots like Lake Tazawa,...

Onsen Yupopo

10/10 Excellent

"Amazing Onsen! Room was great and staff were nice!"

Kamenoi Hotel Tazawako

10/10 Excellent

"This is an older hotel/onsen that has been bought by a Japanese chain, and they have done a great job refurbishing parts of it while keeping the general feel of an older onsen. My friend and I greatly enjoyed our stay. We found the staff very kind and helpful, the food good, and the atmosphere in general very pleasant. Everything felt reasonably priced, and we had no problems using the onsen even with tattoos. We greatly enjoyed our stay and recommend it to anyone else looking for some peace in the Japanese mountainside."

Tsunagi Onsen Shikitei

10/10 Excellent

"This was an excellent onsen hotel (we've stayed in quite a few). The room we had (Japanese style room with open air bath) was spacious, even for a family of four and included a small garden area as well as the bath. The food was exceptional - and served by incredibly friendly and helpful staff who our daughters loved engaging with. There were toys for the children that could be taken to the room and they also enjoyed watching the goldfish that swim in the indoor 'river' in the reception area. There is plenty of car parking too. The only downsides: the bathroom area in the room (i.e. WC and shower/bath, not the in-room open air bath) was a little tired, with some cracked tiles etc. And ideally they would have been able to provide a cot for our baby rather than a small futon. But would highly recommend overall."

Hotel Shion

10/10 Excellent

"Booked it as a place to relax and enjoy. It was a 20 min drive from the morioka station. The place was next to a river and was nice and peaceful. The hotel had 2 onsens - one on the 2nd (larger) and the 3rd. Visited the smaller one on the 3rd which also has an outdoor option, which was nice and peaceful at night. The family room on the top floor had marvellous views of the river and mountains. Rooms were clean and spacious. Futons were prepared when you go for dinner. Kaisekei dinner was excellent as well with different menus every day for our 4 day stay. Breakfast was the same everyday, but the variety was large enough. There were special activities at the hotel every night for about 2 months which were quite memorable. It the special mention must be for the staff. They are really affable and helpful and remember all the small details, like when you have food preferences (wife could not eat raw food), when your last day - and these were servers at the meal times.. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would recommend for a place to just relax and chill"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Obonai?

The best area to stay in Obonai is around Lake Tazawa, particularly near the Tazawako Ski Resort or the lake's eastern shore.

This area is the main draw for visitors to Obonai, offering stunning lake views and access to outdoor activities. Accommodation options range from traditional ryokans to modern hotels, many offering views of the lake or the surrounding mountains. The area around the lake is easily navigable by car, with Route 341 providing access to various points of interest.

For couples seeking a relaxing getaway, the eastern shore of Lake Tazawa is an excellent choice. This part of the lake is known for its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. You can find hotels offering private onsen experiences and fine dining, with easy access to scenic walking paths along the lake. The iconic Tatsuko Statue is also located on this side of the lake, providing a lovely photo opportunity.

Families will find the area near Tazawako Ski Resort particularly convenient. In winter, it offers direct access to skiing and snowboarding facilities, and during warmer months, the resort area transforms into a hub for hiking and other outdoor pursuits.

When is the best time to go to Obonai?

You'll find the landscape lush and green, and it's an ideal time for exploring the region's natural beauty, such as Lake Tazawa, Japan's deepest lake. Autumn provides a stunning display of autumn leaves, especially around the mountains and lakes. Temperatures are comfortably cool, typically between 8°C and 18°C. This season is superb for couples seeking picturesque scenery and a relaxed trip, perhaps visiting traditional onsen resorts like those found in the Nyuto Onsen Village, where the changing colours provide a beautiful backdrop.
