New Haven

Vacationers after an excellent range of cultural and scenic attractions will adore New Haven.

The population of this area of Coastal Connecticut is roughly 130,000.

Hartford, the state capital, is about 35 miles to the north of New Haven, and Bethany is 8 miles to the northwest.

Grab the kids and enjoy some quality time together at Quassy Amusement Park and the Barker Museum. The Connecticut Children's Museum and New Haven Green are also worth a visit if you're looking for more family fun.

Your kids will have an awesome time investigating the native and exotic creatures at the Beardsley Zoo. Be sure to ask at the entrance about hands-on activities and where to find the zoo's more unusual inhabitants.

Experienced wine taster or not, a few hours of trying out a variety of blends at the region's wineries won't disappoint. If you'd like to check out a few, certainly add the Bishops Orchard and Winery, the Gouveia Winery and the Paradise Hills Vineyard to the program. It doesn't matter what order you choose. They are all excellent!

Amid a diverse collection of plants and flowers, an afternoon at the Marsh Botanical Garden is sure to be a pleasant one.

For fresh air and relaxation, grab something for lunch and find a quiet corner at one of the area's leafy green spaces, such as Waterbury Green or Boothe Memorial Park and Museum. Fort Hale Park and Edgerton Park are two more excellent places to while away a lazy day and catch up on some reading.

Learn a bit more about New Haven by collecting some brochures and chatting to the workers at Mead Visitor Center and PEZ Visitor Center.

If the sun is shining, the glistening, glassy surface of Hop Brook Lake is a gorgeous sight.

Visitors who are looking for a relaxing place to spend some time outdoors will be rewarded with large stretches of picturesque coastline. Oak Street Beach and Sandy Point Beach should be your first ports of call. You could also splash around at Lighthouse Point Park and Double Beach.

Switch your phone to silent and give yourself a break from the noise of the modern world at East Rock Park and Sleeping Giant State Park. Nature lovers will also have an excellent time at Silver Sands State Park and West Rock Park.

Set aside a day or two to explore some of the delightful cultural spaces in the area. Meander through the hallways as you check out the unique collections at the Barnum Museum and the Shoreline Trolley Museum. The Ireland's Great Hunger Museum and the Connecticut Audubon Birdcraft Museum are also worth looking at.

Think about spending some time at the Discovery Museum to learn all about scientific discoveries and other mysteries of the world.

The samples of preserved objects at the Peabody Museum of Natural History provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of natural science.

A hub for art lovers, this area is home to numerous spaces in which artists and designers display their work. Stop by the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art for some great examples of what this creative city has to offer. If you want to see more, wrap up the afternoon at the Knights of Columbus Museum and the Housatonic Museum of Art.

Amateur historians can travel back through time at the Eli Whitney Museum and the New Haven Museum. The Stony Creek Museum and the Putnam Cottage Museum are also worthwhile options.

The Yale University and the Albertus Magnus College are certainly worth looking into, even if you're not that into history. You might also like to pull out the camera for some photos at Harkness Tower and the Christopher Columbus Statue.

Hop into the pages of a storybook and appreciate the imposing architecture of Bill Miller’s Castle.

Coming face to face with different religions is often the best aspects of traveling. If you're interested in discovering the spiritual side of New Haven, take a stroll around Trinity Church on the Green, Center Church on the Green and the Gidhapahar Mandir Temple.

Before you pack your bags and head off home, be sure to stop at some of the area's lesser-known attractions. The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale University are well worth a look. Also, think about a trip to the Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center and the John Slade Ely House if you can squeeze it in.
